I'm curious. I'm going paintballing with friends this weekend, I want to go but I don't at the same time. I have no cash because last recently I gave all my cash to my mom so I have nothing left and I don't want my my friend's mom to pay for me but I also don't wanna go, "Yo mom, pay be back all the cash I gave you." Ya know what I mean? I'm thinking like giving him a high five or something as his gift. In all seriousness, I'd probably buy something for him or give him cash later, idk.

So, if you've been in situations like this before, what did you do?

Nothing. I usually just say happy birthday, and leave it at that

You should at least give them a high five. I feel bad though cause it feels like someone's paying me to go to a friend's bday lmao.

Let him know your situation and just say you will make it up to him later. I'm pretty sure he would understand.

Things happen. Sometimes you can't afford to go to a thing. Sometimes a friend will hook you up. Sometimes you'll be the one sorting a friend out, sometimes friends will miss your birthday. Swings and roundabouts. Life gets in the way for us all at some point and if you've got a decent set of people around you, they'll understand that, and so should you.

A witty card wouldn't hurt

I don't usually give gifts My friends are low maintenance (we give gifts but not always), except for my law school friends (I always give gifts to them because they always give gifts to me). A sincere message is always enough in my opinion.

I try to at least get a card and then do something silly like enclose a coupon to go out and eat sometime at their favorite restaurant and I'll pay then.

I'm with Spireite on this one- if they're a good friend, they'll understand. If circumstances change, maybe do something after their birthday. I've usually found that the people who really care, don't care if they get something for their Birthday/holiday/etc.

Don't get me wrong, he knows the situation and he doesn't care he just wants to chill and paintball, but it kinda feels bad having someone pay for you so you can celebrate the birthday of a friend ya know? But I'll still find something to do.
