Hulu Ends Free Streaming as Yahoo Launches Own Service With Anime

New Yahoo View streams anime, Korean dramas, movies, show episodes for free with ads

The Hulu streaming service announced on Monday that it will end its free streaming service and shift entirely to a paid subscription model. At the same time, it is moving its ad-supported free streaming to a new service by Yahoo called Yahoo View. Yahoo View will carry anime, Korean dramas, and movies, as well as the latest five episodes of shows from ABC, NBC, and Fox, eight days after their original air date.

Hulu offers its subscription service for US$7.99 per month with commercials, and US$11.99 per month without commercials.

Yahoo View will have a "beyond the episode" section that focuses on a community-watching experience. Users can view pictures and GIFs from Tumblr, but can visually block content that reveals spoilers about the episode. Yahoo is planning for the service to be available on smartphone apps soon.

Time Warner acquired a 10% stake in Hulu for a US$583 million deal last week, while Verizon is in the process of acquiring Yahoo through a US$4.8 billion deal.

Introducing Yahoo View, a TV Watching Experience Featuring Hulu

Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) is excited to announce the launch of Yahoo View, a new TV-watching site where you can watch episodes of your favorite TV shows and go beyond the episode with clips, recaps and the best of Tumblr fandom. Yahoo View is the extension of Yahoo’s long-standing distribution partnership with Hulu and will offer thousands of TV, anime, Korean drama and movies including full episodes, films, and clips for free. This further emphasizes Yahoo’s commitment to create an experience for people to consume content they care about while being able to connect with a community of like-minded fans.

Featuring content from Hulu, this Fall, Yahoo View will be the best place to watch the last five episodes of ABC, NBC, FOX (8 days after original broadcast) and other network sitcoms, day-after clips, and full seasons of anime and Korean drama. Viewers can also go beyond the episode in a community-watching experience and browse photos and GIFs from the passionate Tumblr fandom. The new site features a “beyond the episode” section that can visually block the enhanced content that might reveal spoilers about the current video playing, and picture-in-picture so viewers can continue to watch while browsing to other content without leaving the screen

“As a TV junkie and Tumblr fan myself, I’m personally excited to have one place that brings together the best of free TV and Tumblr fandom,” said Jess Lee, Vice President of Lifestyles Product at Yahoo. “Yahoo View is our first step towards creating a powerful community TV-watching experience, but it’s really only the beginning.”

“Video is an important part of Yahoo’s strategy and we’re committed to delivering the best digital video content to our users. To date, we’ve streamed amazing experiences across sports, finance, and news,” said Phil Lynch, Vice President and Head of Media Partnerships. “This partnership with Hulu is a natural extension of that strategy, bringing the best of TV & entertainment content to our lifestyle vertical.”

View.yahoo.com is immediately available in the U.S. today. Mobile web and mobile apps will be coming soon.

So they have that little "fandom box" thing.

Some of the shows have them, some don't. I'm wondering how stuff gets there... and I wonder if it might help publishers realize some shows are more popular than they thought... or something, I dunno.

I think they have everything Hulu has. Like, Hulu free streaming hasn't really stopped, it's just moved to a different site under a different name. It's exactly the same as Hulu free streaming, just under a different name. The videos are the same as Hulu, and when I watch an episode on this site, it lets me pick up from the same place in the episode on Hulu (which I subscribe to because it's the only site that has my favorite show (K)).

Damn that is a lot of anime. What drove Hulu to make all these changes?

Except most of those didn't end up leaving. I think they kept almost all of the May ones. They definitely kept everything from Viz.

But that's not the issue. The issue here is whether it's available at all without a subscription, and it is. In that sense, there's no real change.

Anyway, more Tumblr box observations:

The Attack on Titan one is pretty much all Armin.
Seraph doesn't have one but A/Z does.
Tiger & Bunny and Pokemon don't have them.
Fate/Stay Night UBW doesn't have one.

Yea this even started back in FEB so talks / plans must have been in motion already.

Some were from SENTAI / Funi too taking them away

Funi / CR lost titlles too but that was a publisher decision not the Streaming sites ! A lot of people were paying onlyy attention to certain shows being dropped . CR / Funi did annoucements too but more piecemeal So HULU wasnt alone ! How we view anime is changing I wrote before originally anime was on Adult Swim . or the SCi- FI channel then On Demand Anime Network FUNI sdites were getiing popular alomg with HULU CR it just evovles!

I am sure the Answermann ( Justin ) will have more to say in a week or two

I think from what I read they want to more a Sub service only as above they have have some exclusives and Time Warner has A % of Hulu and Verizon is buying Yahoo / all power moves In other words a new remake of itself

They also also have to hold up new episodes of whatever TV series they kept . They are going to keep a big catlog no more? as they are in competition with NETflix / AMAZON PRIME

So it was to get rid of titles that were either poorly viewed or there could be licensing issues with mergers / takeovers so it gets to be sticky legal issues ..

Before I started paying subs TO CR / FUNI I watched a lot of titles that werent elsewhere to be found legally !

I am not angry more to point how anime viewing has changed and is changing

I don't get the point of this move. So they dumped anime to Yahoo so Yahoo can stream for free, yet now all Hulu exclusive stuff is sub only, but little to no anime?

Nothing got removed from Hulu because of this move.

Hulu's subscription system is exactly the same as it was before.

Except now, if you don't have a subscription, you go to view.yahoo.com to watch it instead of going to Hulu.com.

And Time Warner couldn't make that happen that fast.

Learn something about the world before you decide to comment, please.

It's one of those massive, neverending lists. If you're looking for a specific thing, use search.

Also the genre lists are pretty useless because they only show ~30 things, but they show different things every time, like random, so it's not a good way to find a specific thing you're looking for.

not like I use Hulu for anything, the adverts are cancer, and when the ad free service costs as much as netflix, it's just better to keep using netflix for my western tv

It certainly isn't neverending.

I scrolled to the actual end before posting the link:

I count 407 titles currently.

If the search works as it did on Hulu, I would say try it, but don't give up if the title doesn't pop up in the results. Sometimes it is listed by an English title and won't show up if you search by the Japanese one, and there were those are, "I know they have it, why isn't it showing up?" times where only browsing found a title.

Awww... Yahoo sucks. It's filled with trolls and scammers. I wish it would go under. Hulu can go to hell for doing this.
