Whenever i come across an anime title that i think might be worth watching, the first thing i do is search for it on CrunchyRoll.

However, frequently the disappointing result is this:

Sorry, due to licensing limitations, videos are unavailable in your region.

Now, after seeing this message a few times too many, i can't help but wonder if premium membership for people outside the US is really worth it, because there seems to be a huge inequality in content accessibility due to this international licensing.

It's hard not to feel a bit like the third wheel premium member.

CR can't get the licenses for everything in a capitalistic world. Catalog titles for past shows are always going to be a difficult problem to solve, as the licenses for most of those which they don't already have are already mostly taken up by the competition, even if they aren't being used outside the US.

Although, they are trying harder going forward with recent simulcast releases, by partnering with a Japanese company to get on production committees to establish rights early, and having exclusive deals with companies such as Kodansha.

When you pay for premium, you (mostly, with few exceptions) aren't paying for content differences from the free ad-supported model, you are paying for higher resolution and especially for ad-free watching. Almost all the same shows will be available to you with or without premium, it is just a quality difference. It is up to you to determine whether that difference is worth paying for the experience or not.

Like asharka stated above, you're not paying for "free roam," you're paying for ad-free, HD, and no additional delays.

The easiest solution not get disappointed is not using Google to access titles on Crunchyroll. Unlike our own listings (/videos/anime/alpha?group=all) Google does not filter titles from its search results which are region locked.

We are striving to have content parity between all regions that we serve. However it is not always possible to achieve this, as there is competition in the market bidding on some of these titles. Some publishers in Japan also have their own plans for their series and possibly do not license out specific titles for all regions.

The largest difference in offerings exists for older titles, as we did not serve any regions outside of the US for several years. This is not something that can be easily addressed, as many of those titles were licensed by other players in the market in the various regions or the licensing situation is very complex after a couple of years have passed.
