That it is intended for adult readers.
You will often see adult manga with predominantly adult characters as there is a school of thought that readers like to have characters they can relate to. However there are exceptions.

To expand on what MidoriNoTora said:

Usually you'll see such manga described as either "josei" (targeted at adult women) or "seinen" (targeted at adult men).

Both of them are more likely to have sex scenes and nudity (censored of course), graphic violence, or plots that revolve around college life or young adult challenges (new jobs, affairs, marriage, etc.).

In both cases, there is a very wide variety of manga covered by these categories. That being said, there are certain patterns:

The stereotypical josei manga will be about a young woman forced into a relationship with a handsome, powerful, and cold-hearted man.

A stereotypical seinen manga are darker and grittier: violence, sexual assault, adultery, etc. are all common themes.

Does that mean there won't be seinen manga targeted at 40 year olds? Also was the Berserk manga censored?

"Targeted" just means the primary demographic of the magazines that the manga are printed in. Maxim is "targeted" at 20-somethings, but plenty of 40+ year olds read it. Different seinen magazines have different niches: some are aimed at college kids, some at young professionals, and there probably are a couple aimed at a slightly older crowd too. Also, just because the stars are a certain age doesn't mean that's the targeted demographic: plenty of older people watch tv shows and movies about 20-somethings.

Personally, I'm a 38 year old male and enjoy plenty of seinen and Josie manga. Some of it I find asinine, but a lot of it is very intelligent.

Finally, by "censored" I just meant that the don't actually show genetalia, not that there has been any post-production censorship applied. Sorry for the confusion.

thanks for replying! I did some research on the seinen magazines " Grand Jump" and "Big Comic Original" which i believed were aimed at 30 and 40 year olds so what you said earlier kinda of confused me.
you should check out those magazines!
