A real man is a real man. Why does that have to be defined? We are all different, but have the same basic needs. We all have emotions, yet express them differently. Some people are more productive in society than others. Does that make them any more real than another? In my opinion, there is no solid cut off from when a boy becomes a man. We are just people that are growing and learning, and each at their own pace.

This. And the ability to swim through balls with aplomb.

Does not beat weak women and possibly men, but does hit back if a woman of sufficient strength hits first, but doesn't engage in a homicidal beat down of anyone.

Perhaps the question should be: How does the society you live in define a "real man"?

You would then get answers like:

a. a six pack
b. a car
c. knows how to fix a car
d. owns a truck and/or an ATV
e. owns a gun(s)
f. uses gun(s) during hunting season
g. is a farmer/rancher with a cowboy hat
h. has bulging muscles, etc.

To be a "real man"? I'd call that someone perfectly willing to cry over emotional things, go to the doctor when they've got something concerning going on, take responsibility for things, and help out whenever/wherever they can.

A real man is the sum of his family's upbringing in perspective with how society raises him. He is real no matter what he turns out to be whether it be upstanding citizen, slacker, murderer, or elsewise etc. If everyone were raised with the same nutrition and standards until high school ended then there could be a more definitive term, but no one has the same experiences, same genes, same family.

Whether his sexuality isn't thought of in the norms, his political stances isn't out of bounds, his family out of touch, etc he is a man none the less.

The defining feature underlying all of this is the two simple words, "Own it". If he can own his lifestyle without getting thrashed around by others for it (so willingly changes course instead of bullied into it or forced to change) he is a man, same as a real woman would be.
