Health, dental, vision... Insurance makes these things somewhat affordable in the U.S. but things can get out of hand fast. Because healthcare providers are allergic to transparency it's difficult to know how much you'll have to pay until after you are already treat and they send you a bill.

It wouldn't really be "free" as the cost of healthcare would just be reflected in taxes instead. I do think it should be more affordable, though--like I just got a $300 bill for a dental exam... nothing else, just a comprehensive exam. Providers really need to be, as you have suggested, transparent about the cost of what they are doing and realistic about the cost of doing it--I really don't think 20 minutes and a set of x-rays should cost that much.

I don't view physical and psychological health as a right, I view it as capacity for productivity. If people aren't healthy, they aren't going to be very productive. In fact, they are often highly destructive. For instance, when one person struggles with their health, the people close to them usually also struggles in some form or another. Take one case of psychological health, as an example, where a man loses his job, feels incompetent, ends up drinking, gains weight, gets lost in computer games, and maybe even lash out at his wife (not necessarily in a violent way). These things effects his wife, and their children. The wife's experiences with him passes on to how she interacts with other men, which effects them negatively. Their kids are ultimately effected by both parents, and affect their peers. It's a pool of shit that just continues to grow. This is what I mean by an ever-deteriorating society.

So, do I think that it should be free? Yes. If a country wants a stable economy, and a stable society, it should offer its citizens basic human needs.

How about require fixed pricing on all medical procedures so you can figure out how much you will pay before hand and they have to tell you the price of each thing they do before you agree to it.

Also I don't want free healthcare. I'd rather have affordable healthcare and rip away power from the insurance companies.

The quality of mental health isn't really the problem with mental health as much as the affordability of mental health therapy. The only reform we truly need in that aspect is to make it easily available to the bottom 99%.

America attaches way less stigma than Japan.

Inb4 a certain someone comes in here and states "Just because you ask for it doesn't mean you deserve it".

To paraphrase BlueOni, "If there is audible benefit to society, then there's serious consideration to be had on the implementation of that policy"

Honestly? People don't deserve to die at the hands of the lone gunman, and since you're willing to debate mental health care instead, why not make it actually affordable? Heck, a great deal of university include some form of free or subsidized psychological therapy.

It should definitely be more affordable, "free" healthcare would mean higher taxes.

To be honest, I don't think it should, although I firmly believe that the healthcare in many countries is outrageously priced. Cost has to come from somewhere, and I fear that "free healthcare" opens the doors to people being weaseled out of money in more indirect areas, such as suspiciously high taxes and mysterious fees.

What I really want to know is why people are hell-bent of slamming any sort of public healthcare as some sort of communist system. It's really confusing to me. Even if it can lead to better, healthier, and more productive society, why are people so firmly against it and throwing around stuff like "higher taxes" or "communism"?

I see it more as an investment. Healthier people produce better products, whether they be candy bars, cabbages, or computer code.

That's not a bad thing.

Some people can't afford healthcare even when it's affordable.
In said situations tax should cover helping them.

Absolutely.

You know what sucks? Going to the ER because you can't afford a doctor, finding out you've got shingles (which is the suck, by the way), him writing you prescriptions for pain meds and steroids....but you can't afford the $150 to get them. But, hey, that medical bill on your credit report isn't going away.

So.... yeah, currently have shingles. I hate my life in this moment.
