I'm so disappointed in all of you. Clearly you've never done a proper research on it. It's the character. Yes fashion also but that's not all there is to it. Educate yourself, it's a bloody SUBCULTURE.

I am Goth. Been Goth since the mid 80's, and am still Goth. I wear black and go to see Goth bands and Goth events all the time. It's not a fad or something 'I'll grow out of it'. it's part of me.

Goth is many things to many people. A Music scene, a fashion scene, a literature scene, and to many of my friends a lifestyle choice as well. it's a broad category, and people are free to dabble or dive in as you see fit. For some it's just Goth for events or gigs. For others it's part of their life. For some it's just the books or films. Take from it what you want,it's there for all.

We are not all drawn to fluffy pink rainbows and unicorns, this years must have fashions, and 'family' films. Some of us are drawn to the dark side of life, horror films, vampires novels and elegant Victorian clothing.
No, not the evil side - the dark side. There is a difference, a big difference. The evil side is for nutjobs and whackos. yeah, you get some nutjobs that happen to be Goth, but same as you get some nutjobs that are Christians. That doesn't make all Christians nutjobs, just as it doesn't make all Goths nutjobs despite what the media might like to portray. We just prefer the dark side of life.

The dark side is the funeral side of life. Death is a fact of live, and nothing to be afraid of The Mexicans celebrate the 'day of the dead'. UK, Europe and the US have Halloween, and many other cultures have similar events. The pageant of death was a big thing for the Victorians, and given great attention with much grandeur and style. Some of us love the imagery and style of it all so much it becomes our style and our passion. If you've ever enjoyed a vampire movie, that's a hint of a sliver of the Gothic enchantment some of us find so fascinating

I prefer skulls and bats and wear black. Not because I'm sad and miserable. But because I genuinely prefer it. To me it's the sensual slightly erotic look of the vampire or vampiress. The elegant lace and velvet. I strive to look elegant, and Gothic, not sad and miserable. I'm happy, and so are my friends. We may look like we are going to a funeral, but chances are we are off to a gig or a party, or club and are having a great time. Our humour is dark and very Adams family/Munsters in style, but we are oddly, a very nice, welcoming and friendly bunch.

Do we care what other people think about us? No. Not one jot. We are who we are. You are who you are. I've been Goth for over 30 years now, I'm way past any desire to be 'normal'.

Goth is as much a mindset as it is a fashion statement. The screw em all attitude is just as important as the living dead look IMHO.
