I'm favor of a 3 strikes and your out type of system. 3rd conviction of a felony and you should become fertilizer so that your existence can do at least some good for the world.

Is that angry and edgy enough for you to retreat to your safe space?

No. They decided to misbehave and be animals, so they should be treated as such. Now on the topics of why people that get jailed and fined should be a different story. Like someone paying $2000 for smuggling a Kinder Egg is different than someone committing a murder.

If serious crimes received a serious punishment, then it would happen less in my opinion. Or option two: rehab/mental health facilities. But so many people are uneducated about mental illness and don't take it seriously, which breaks my heart. Psychology is fairly new, but it's very important to have a healthy mind.

The only requirement for human rights to apply to you is the fact that you're human. There are, however, certain human rights that some convicted criminals (while in detention) are not allowed to have, such as the following: (1) suffrage and (2) freedom of movement. So the question should be this: "Which human rights are convicted criminals deprived of?"

Edit: removed the 3rd of the enumeration because it was wrong.

I do not believe we have the right to treat each other so poorly. We are all capable of such horrid things. Empathy goes a long way.

Wow. Clearly none of you are related to or are friends with people who have been to prison.

What the... why do you even need to ask? Of course you need to apply human rights to criminals, if you didn't, you should lock yourself up as well. You'd be hardly better than the psychopath sharing the cell. In fact, if you thought it was okey to treat your fellow man inhumanely, you'd be a psychopath.

Finally somebody pointed it out. You'd be appalled how this is an issue in my country right now. Here millions of people (those who voted for the current president) won't even bat an eye when ALLEGED criminals are being killed on the spot. And when we emphasize the importance of human rights, we are being condemned by the supporters of the current root of all evil president.
