So far this season, at least three shows I'm following (one of which I dropped not long after the fact) have had a "x.5" episode smack in the middle somewhere, which is either a clipshow/recap or a VA behind-the-scenes thing.

Is this normal? Because I don't seem to remember this being as big a deal previously, but this year is really the first time I've been actively following as many simulcasts as I am right now, and none of the spring shows I followed did this.

And frankly, it's kind of annoying.

EDIT: And no, it doesn't seem to be because it's an Olympic year, because only a few shows are doing it and the .5s are airing all around the summer schedule; only one of them I'm aware of has actually fallen in range of the Olympic Games.

Did they all coincide with the Olympics?

Not really. The upcoming episode 7.5 of 91 Days doesn't fit that theory because the Olympics are already over, and B-Project's .5 episode was way before the Olympics. Cheer Danshi did their .5 episode during the first week of the Olympics, but as far as I can tell it's the only one. That's what makes this so baffling: there's no apparent REASON for it.

It seems pretty normal, to my recollection. Recap episodes are just a fact of life and (I would imagine) also a fact of the animation business dropping the ball all the time.

Gotcha. I was curious if they were ONAs or something to hold people over if the show had lost its timeslot to the Olympics but this sounds like episodes just couldn't make it out the door on time. Their production schedules can get very tight depending on how things go.

Man, you'd think after 20 years of watching anime I'd remember how production is handled in Japan. I guess I'm not used to it because outside of the old digital next-day fansub days B.C. (Before Crunchyroll), most of what I watched was already finished ages ago and took forever to make it over here. I've only really been doing the simulcast thing since last year.
