I'm actually currently playing Radiant Historia right now (Chapter 6 and 5). The story and music are extremely good and its keeping me going but I'm finding the battle system to be kind of boring.

I mean Xenogears if you never played it but that's not really obscure anymore.

Both of these games are about 25 hours long so not too much of a time sink but I enjoyed them:
Ring of Red for PS2 - unique battle system - good story that would have been great if some parts weren't lost in translation
Shadow Hearts 1 (PS2) - has the best story of the SH games

Front Mission 4 for PS2 is quite good (also so is FM3).

.hack//GU - if you really want to splash some cash (it looks like we aren't getting a rerelase/remaster).

Several games mentioned that have Arms in the title. I have thoughts on those.

Enchanted Arms is entertaining, but ... I recommend turning off the English voice acting. There's one guy in there you'll hear and just go "... no" and stop playing. (And I'm usually a fan of game dubs!)

Thousand Arms is really quirky and strange, but it's fun despite a lot of endgame grinding. Your main character is quite possibly the horniest guy in JRPG history, and it's worth it to purposely pick the wrong options in the dating sim conversations to see what people say. The localizers (Atlus) actually encouraged doing so when the game was released, too.

Wild Arms is a great series, but it's pretty uneven. I recommend all of them, but, if you end up hating WA4, that's okay. It's widely considered the worst of the lot.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is one of my favorite games of all time. But not many people played it. The game seemed to have flown under the radar. I recommend it to basically everyone I talk to.

Shadow Hearts is the most underrated RPG series I've ever played, another good recommendation is Digital Devil Saga 1+2

The two Baten Kaitos games definitely need more love. The visuals, setting, music, and story were very well done. Card system was kinda a pain in the ass (particularly in the second game) but it's pretty fun once you get the hang of it.

The Shining Force games up to 3 are really good too.

Awe, im sad. Noone mentioned Legend of Legaia? Was neat and interesting how they did the combat (input selected martial arts) with combo system, and the story was kind of nifty too. Breath of Fire 1-4, though 3 and 4 are probably the most well known. Overall, good series.
