Where I'm from, if you're African-Norwegian, that means that you have an African and a Norwegian citizenship. If you're black and have a Norwegian citizenship, but not an African citizenship, then you're not African, or African-Norwegian, you're just Norwegian.

If you're one of those who refer to yourself as-- or refer to others as African-American, do you do so because they have an African and an American citizenship, or do you just say it to remind us that you or they are black? And, if so, why not just say black?

never understood why people used african-american to describe themselves honestly. It's rather silly. They are not from Africa and have no nationality connection to it. They are Americans. White people don't call themselves "European-Americans". White is white and black is black.

I'll call myself American way before I call myself black.

And I'm fine with that. I just dislike "insert country/continent here"-American from people who were born and raised in America

I feel like everyone i just quoted doesn't know what the word "Caucasian" means.....

To a small degree we do, it's just not very common. It probably has more to do with the fact that at the founding of the USA what was considered an American Citizen was mostly by far and large former Englishmen. The Constitution originally had everyone other than wealthy land owning white American disenfranchised. Not even average white men were aloud to vote at the beginning of the USA. It took over 200 years to get where we are at and we still have a long way to go.

man, wonder which one every book, manga, anime, and foreign film referred to when they said "america"

gosh this just changes everything

I also wonder why the people I know in South America ask me about how my life is in "America", since they already technically live in America...

Because that's not how ethnicities are categorized here.

The majority race in America is caucasian. Those outside the norm are attributed with the country of their roots and paired with the word American.

That's why we classify others as Asian-Americans, African-Americans, etc.

And African-American sounds a fuck of a lot less racist than calling someone the color black, to me, anyway.

If we are to refer to white people as Caucasoid, should we then refer to black people as Negroid, and Asians as Mongoloids? If we should not refer to them as Negroid and Mongoloid, is it because Negroid and Mongoloid are now considered 'bad' terms, but then how come Caucasoid is not considered a 'bad' term?

In America we like to differentiate each other to the little possible details.

If your a citizen of the U.S then your an American but most people here say Country + American. Other countries don't do this and find this is odd and I too agree it's odd. I feel that Americans get stuck on race too much which puts barriers between people within the nation.

I guess in Australia we're kind of new to having so many Africans here now. I've never heard anyone use the term "African Australian"
And the indigenouse people here of course cant be called "Aboriginal Australian"....

Calling America the United States of America doesn't really seem true. It might be its name but from the outside it doesn't seem very united

I prefer to just keep it simple and go with black. Why? Because:
-Why would I knowingly identify with the people who sold my ancestors into slavery in the first place?
- Never stepped foot in Africa
- Hold no allegiance towards Africans
-Have absolutely no intention of heading to that shithole in the first place
and lastly
Antigua is the furthest I can trace my Ancestry, so I guess West-Indian American would be the most accurate(thanks mom for keeping up with that kind of information! .

No! Opening a can of worms...

We call that a worm where I'm from, not a snake, nevermind
