Okay, so here's your viewing assignment. Download, stream or find DVDs of the following movies:

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
The Producers (1967 version - accept no substitutes)
The Frisco Kid
Silver Streak
See No Evil, Hear No Evil
Start the Revolution Without Me
Haunted Honeymoon (with his late wife, Gilda Radner, of SNL fame)

Most are Mel Brooks comedies. These were made in the '60's and 70's, so some of what was then timely and risque humor might seem tame when held up to today's stuff. If nothing else, watch Willy Wonka. It will wipe away that Depp travesty from your gray matter.

Sad to see Gene go, having enjoyed some of the roles that he played (Young Frankenstein comes to mind... "Walk. This. Way..."). But I never realized how old he was. He accomplished so much in that decades-long career of his, and will certainly be missed. RIP

(Oh, yeah... check and see if Richard's around up there, will ya?)

When I was a child, there was no way of recording anything on television. No DVRs, no VCRs, no cloud, no nothing. You saw movies at the theater and on television ONLY when the three major networks (there were only three channels, plus local affiliates and one or two public TV stations - no cable, no satellite) decided to air the movie. There was no way to buy them, other than a ticket or waiting for the next broadcast. Where we lived, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was major holiday programming at Thanksgiving and less often, Christmas, as were movies like the Wizard of Oz and anything from Disney. I and my little sister would each get hot chocolate, share a big bowl of popcorn (NOT made in a microwave) and watch Willy Wonka as a treat, IF we'd done all our chores. Of all of the characters Wilder played throughout the years, his Willy Wonka was the standout. We lost Robin Williams two years ago and now Gene Wilder...just when we desperately need their humor the most.

Seriously, 2016 can show itself the door. It's taken too many good people.
