I think there is alot more to do than just stop reproducing.
In fact, who know, my daugther can be the one that will find the answer to global warming.
My son may be able to cue cancer.
OR they can be both hillbillies.

But i cant simply wash away my guilt of what hapening to the planet by simply saying : well im not having kids, i do my part.

Given Reason = My child could find a way to save the world.
Real Reason = "Mother of God" complex. (Also applies to men).
Suggested Alternative = If you want something done right, do it yourself.

Dude...these people need to get laid.
Our Planet Earth is damaged beyond repair.
They need to open their eyes to that.

(This is mostly for discussing the movement VHMT but other things are bound to arise too)

Q: What is the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement?

VHEMT (pronounced vehement) is a movement not an organization. It's a movement advanced by people who care about life on planet Earth. We're not just a bunch of misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.

We don't carry on about how the human race has shown itself to be a greedy, amoral parasite on the once-healthy face of this planet. That type of negativity offers no solution to the inexorable horrors which human activity is causing.

Rather, The Movement presents an encouraging alternative to the callous exploitation and wholesale destruction of Earth's ecology.

As VHEMT Volunteers know, the hopeful alternative to the extinction of millions of species of plants and animals is the voluntary extinction of one species: Homo sapiens... us.

Each time another one of us decides to not add another one of us to the burgeoning billions already squatting on this ravaged planet, another ray of hope shines through the gloom.

When every human chooses to stop breeding, Earth's biosphere will be allowed to return to its former glory, and all remaining creatures will be free to live, die, evolve (if they believe in evolution), and will perhaps pass away, as so many of Nature's "experiments" have done throughout the eons.

It's going to take all of us going.

Basically what they want is for people to stop breeding, out of their own free will and by doing so they hope it will eventually lead to the extinction of mankind.
They make a lot of good point's too, but i consider myself as "just" a supporter as i think the extinction of humanity is taking it a bit too far.

So what are your oppinions on this?

Do they have a point or are they just a bunch of crazy people?

How do you justify having a kid when the earth is clearly overpopulated? (look a bit on this http://www.vhemt.org/demography.htm#dud before you speak up... done? now look again.)

Would the earth be better off without humans?

And finally do you belive that we could just move over to another planet?

Not every part of the Earth is habitable.

By the way, let's look at some facts.

a. All organisms are capable of producing so many offspring that population size would increase exponentially, if not constrained.
b. In any environment, there exists a limited number of resources.
c. As a result, all organisms must be engaged in a constant competition to acquire these limited resources for themselves in order to survive.
d. Those organisms that are better able to acquire the necessary resources are more likely to reach maturity, and to pass these heritable characteristics on to their progeny, while those organisms that are at a disadvantage will tend to reproduce less (differential reproduction).

The last part, point d, is the only point that doesn't hold true for the human race. All members of the human race are generally given the means to support themselves and reproduce if they are unable to do so alone. As well, the number of births are generally greater than the number of deaths.

So, logically, we'll eventually produce too much weight and sink the ship.

To fix this, you can do one of two things: a) reduce the number of births, or b) increase the number of deaths.

Or perhaps a third option, c) make a new ship (i.e. find a new planet).

Hmm It's a cute Idea, but logically the only people who'll go extinct are the non-breeders... leaving the breeders (my 13+ children, lol j/k) to take their place.

Humans are already trying to cause voluntary extinction, ever since the Cold War, and maybe even before then. In anycase, this is absolute foolishness, when humans die out, we'll die out when nature intends for us to die out and we have lost the will to live on.

I don't know whether this will work or not. Though from the sound of it, i support it.

Humans have clearly over populated the Earth, and if you /do/ want to have a child; by all means you can adopt a little life from a third world country (china/africa) or wait for a "in country adoption"(e.g: canada takes up to eight years)

there are a lot of lives out there that needs to be helped, and adopting instead of having a child of your own is a great way to do this "vHEMT" =) personally, I would probably choose to adopt > having a child.

its good for the child, its good for the Earth, its good for me even (without going through the pain of giving birth; going through the danger of giving birth).

So, heck, why not? sounds like a great idea to me =O

p.s: though this "vhem" is already happening a lot in north america, because as research have shown/proven that a couple without any children will have a happier life than a couple with a children.

plus, a lot of married couples these days choose not to have a child; imagine your self rising another "you" (oh the horror) think about all the money you would have to spent on the child, and think about all the time you have to give up for the child....i think A LOT of people from my generation isn't going to have kids for all the time and expenses we'll have to spent on the kid...and not going to stop having children because of this VHEMT.

btw: There are more old people than young people (by old, it means 65+) in north america, the population is growing older and older. People are getting a longer life spawn, so the death rate dropped by like 10~15 years in the past 10~15 years. in canada the average life spawn for males is 70, and females is 72. and for the world is in the 6x.

so, as time goes on..humans WILL die out slowly, either by choice, or just by nature or by science because of our life spawn is getting bigger and bigger and birth rate is getting lower and lower.

It's a nice idea and all, but a little premature i think.

Every species will die out eventually, humans are no exception. Breed away, damage what you want, kill as many of your fellow humans as you can. It's not going to change the fact, that eventually, the universe will have 0% human life.

Since it's going to happen 'naturally' anyway, why work at it?

We really should just sink Africa and maybe part of Europe and Southern America.

But yea, I will have kids. Why? Cause I'll long be dead before we'll have major overpopulation problems, and it won't be MY problem.
