Hello,

Before May of this year I had never heard of Crunchyroll and now I'm wishing it had remained that way. In April, I was contacted by Bank of America regarding my CC and they told me that my CC was used at a merchant were fraudulent activity was reported. I received a new card and a month later in May, the first charges appeared. I complained the the CC company and was refunded. The merchant (crunchyroll) was made aware as well and refunded the charges. The following month it occurred again, and in July, and in August. I disputed each and was refunded and given a new card. I cancelled the card and closed the account in early august but the charge still hit the account even after it was closed. I was told by BOA that they could only refund, but not prevent the charges and the merchant would need to cancel the subscription. The merchant only gives me the run around. I have emails that go unanswered for weeks and when Crunchyroll support does answer, they just say someone is looking into it, but no one ever gives an update. Meanwhile I'm still being charged for a service I never signed up for. I received a list of all my CC #s I ever had with BOA, but I suspect that one card is the culprit (the card I originally had success getting refunded). There has to be a way to stop these charges or get one of my cases escalated.

I don't work for Crunchyroll, but I'm interested in your story so help me out here:

Did you fully cancel your first Credit Card and receive an entirely new credit card with new number and new account? Because if you did that, I don't understand how Crunchyroll is charging your new card if they con't have the new CC number on record.

How is is possible for Crunchyroll to charge a new credit card with a difference CC number without you ever having used the new card on their site? If you fully closed the account (and fired up a new account), how can Crunchyroll still charge a closed account?

It's not making sense.

Or is all of this going through PayPal and you're adding your new cards to your PayPal account as you cancel your old ones? Are you adding new cards to a PayPal account and CR is simple charging the PayPal account?

The way it was explained to me from BOAs fraud department, closing the accounts are not enough for recurring charges. The charges will still route correctly even when the account is "closed". This is done to prevent users from having to update their info everytime they change a card. There have been a number of cases where someone that closed an account had it hit their credit report a year later because they believed that closing the account would resolve it. I have the previous text chat saved, but it appears that they refunded the charges based on the wording, but did not prevent any future charges by removing the account.

The account was not created by me, so I cannot login to cancel it myself. The only way to get around this is to have crunchyroll remove it from their system. I have had 3 or 4 tickets open, but the last request I get is "we have escalated the issue and will respond shortly".

The cards are not being added to paypal. They weren't even being used when the next 7 dollar charge from crunchyroll hit them.

Ah, okay. I see now. Thanks.

Well, good luck. Hopefully shinryou will see your topic and get it straighten out for you.

Cheers.

To clarify, you yourself never signed up for anything at CR, and the charges originated using the old card number?

If so, it seems the bank issuing a new card to prevent fraudulent activity only works if the charges aren't recurring.

Exactly. The problem is that I can't get Crunchyroll to budge on cancelling the recurring charge. Considering that these are fraud charges and that the bank repeatedly refunds them, you would think that crunchyroll is being hit with a chargeback fee of some kind each time this happens (that's more than the amount charged), but I guess that isn't enough to get them moving.

Your ticket history is a mess :| You sent so many separate ones (including the chats with the chat agents), which makes it so hard to track who did what and what data was provided. I'll try to figure it out somehow ...

Update: I recieved an email stating that the card has been removed. The defrauder was in the Philipines. Thanks shinryou and everyone else for your assistance.
