Does anyone know if I need to have played / watched any of Persona prior to this to understand and enjoy it? I did think about catching up with the Persona anime when this was first announced but I think it came out to the equivalent of about 75 episodes so I didn't want to binge it all if it wasn't necessary...

None of the Persona games have anything to do with each other short of taking place within the same universe, so no, you don't need any prior experience.

Also, the Persona 4 The Animation anime was 26 episodes and Persona 4 The Golden Animation spinoff/sequel/whatever (without an understanding of the game(s), it's a complicated situation) anime was 13 episodes.

There is also the Persona: Trinity Soul 26 episode anime, but that is not based on any of the actual games, is not canon in any way, and even the actual creators of the game series hate it and don't want anyone to watch it, so you can and should ignore it completely.

Regardless, even counting the anime that doesn't count, that's 65 episodes.

No, you do not. The only thing this special has any ties to is the upcoming game that it acts as a prequel to. While still set in the same universe, from Persona 3 on each entry in the Persona series has been mostly standalone. There are occasionally references to each other or cameos, and some of the spinoff titles have stronger ties (like P4 Arena, the fighting game, being a full-on crossover between P3 and P4), but plot-wise there's nothing requiring you to play the main entries in any particular order.

As for the other anime, while I found both the P4 series and P3 movies to be quite fun, if a bit rushed, the Trinity Souls anime doesn't usually come highly recommended. Not to discourage you from watching it or even saying that it's particularly bad or anything, it's just kind of an odd non-canon spinoff of sorts with tertiary ties to Persona 3 (but again, nothing necessarily requiring you to have played it).

Basically, none of the modern games (P3 and on) have much to do with each other until you start delving into the spinoffs, and as such, the various anime adaptations also have nothing to do with each other except for the obvious ones like P4 and P4 Golden.

EDIT:
Looks like I took a little too long posting that, lol

Okay thanks, this was my main misunderstanding, I thought there was a single continuity between all of the games / series (also I didn't know about Trinity Soul not being particularly related so thanks).

As regards episode count I believe I was including the Persona 3 movies as well in approximate length (i.e. how many lots of 25 minutes they would equal combined together (I had a lot of freetime at university when I counted these things lol))

Like the other posters said, their no need to play or watch the other Persona series since each one is self contain. Do try the games out when you do get a chance since their very good JRPGs.
