Your post implies after a point a show going on so long means it's bad storytelling.

Atleast that's how I read it lorreen and I think the longer the better.

I wish they made more bleach for example imo the longer a story the more room for depth and creating a lore filled world.

While it's not inevitable, I do think the longer a show goes on the more likely it is to decline in quality, and also that the story wears out, loses energy, or is likely to accumulate more baggage from bad decisions that do affect the story telling. Well-crafted and executed story arcs as part of an ongoing bigger story make it possible for a show to stay vibrant over multiple seasons, but even then it's really common to keep something going past the point of it being interesting (to me). I have enjoyed some tv shows (not anime) over multiple seasons in spite of them having some very clunky seasons, but even the ones that I think ended up dragging it out too long benefited from not going on continuously almost every week. There were clear breaks between seasons that I think prevented against too much fatigue on the part of the viewer, and also meant each season could be easily approached as a new story on the part of the creators.

I do sometimes get so accustomed to enjoying a show week after week or episode after episode in a binge that I miss it briefly once it's ended (that happened with both Hikaro no Go and Space Brothers*), but for the most part I don't want an endless show (and I wouldn't have in either of those cases either). A story is best when there's a beginning a middle and an end, and good pacing carrying one through those parts of the story. When a story goes on a very long time, that classic structure is lost--It becomes more of a soap opera style thing, which has its own appeal and structure, but doesn't bring the same kind of satisfaction to me.

Naruto is particularly problematic because there were no clear breaks, and arcs were inconsistently developed. Instead of real breaks there were long periods of filler that contributed little to the story and, especially later in Shippuden, interrupted the arc in a way that was disruptive to the flow of the story.

*Both Hikaru no Go and Space Brothers ended at points before the manga ended. It was done pretty well with Space Brothers, because there was a nice end of an arc. Hikaru no Go was horrible. It kind of just left off in the middle of tournament--though the manga continued a little further it also, being a serialized sort of thing as most manga are, never got to what would have been a real end of the story.

mean, what about one piece then? Im 100 eps in and I still don't like it, and they say its gonna take another 13 years for it to finish

I've also tried watching One Piece, but I've only got as far as episode 54, and it's really not of very high interest to me at all, so I have no opinion about whether its a good thing or a bad thing that's it been so long-lived.

They're finally ending this?!

I think this went into more fillers than Bleach did.

im sad :c

I've moved this to the Anime forum.

I think the show dragged on way longer than it should have for good storytelling, and I'm not at all sad. I stopped genuinely enjoying the show a long time ago, and if I tune back in to watch it wind down, and they do that well I'm only likely to tear up from a sense of satisfaction and closure.

Sorry, but it does get crap after a certain amount of episodes (I meant long anime series in general...not just Naruto). I don't know about OP, since that's WAAAAY too goddamn long for me, but it takes a skilled writer to make a 100+ series interesting. And the writers for Bleach and Naruto animes weren't it.

But that's an opinion and not actually true to all which is my point objectively it doesn't get crap unless the writing gets bad.
