On weaker connections, ads often caused episodes to just stop playing on apps. This caused people needing to restart the app and video which added more than an episode worth of ads for one episode. I have recently upgraded to a stronger ISP and I am not viewing Crunchyroll much anymore so not sure if this problem still exists but wouldn't be surprising since they have for years without being addressed.

I remember this problem when I first used Crunchyroll on my comp years ago. I sometimes switch between premium and free and to my knowledge this is no longer a problem. What is a problem is late night Xbox streams stopping and the app trying to make me exit.

Warawara have more of a problem with when these ads appear. Anime episodes are divided into prologue, opening, part A, part B, ending and next episode preview sections. If there are any ads, they should go between part A and B, before the show and after it. They're being shown in random places, which has negative impact on viewing experience. Pokemon, for example, ends part A with a shilouette of a Pokemon, so that while the ads are showing you would think of which one it is, and then after the commercials, when part B begins, you are shown the answer.

These complaints should be done at Hulu. Like 7.99/month isn't enough for ad-free streams? That's where Netflix has you beat.

I'm just glad this place isn't hemorrhaging money like Youtube is, frankly.

I don't mind watching ads, really. I just have 3 suggestions:

1. Tell viewers how many ads there are left per "ad break". Most people (I imagine) don't like the sense of being stuck in an ad purgatory.
2. Remove the skip button from everything but infomercials, or barring that actually make the button do something besides just automatically queueing up another (oftentimes identical) ad.
3. Figure out how to prevent the app from playing 2 ads simultaneously, endlessly looping the same ad for 15+ minutes, or simply not loading a new ad after playing the first ad.

Hopefully one day I'll have the entertainment budget to keep up a premium subscription. In the meantime, a more stable app for non-premium users would be appreciated.

Advice - ABP works right now, so you can watch ad free. It is better than spending 60 minutes watching 21-23 minutes worth of anime and 40 minutes worth of ads that make you want to jump in front of a train.

Considering the price of licensing Anime to show off, I'd rather let them get the ad revenue. I support AdBlock wholeheartedly, but when you get sites like this that are willing to give you the stuff you want in a legal way for free, it's worth supporting them in at least ads. From what I understand, the price to license a single season of lesser known anime titles can cost ~$1-5k, and some of the more popular series can cost up to $10k per season Some movies/series can cost over $1,000,000 to license. Take those prices and multiply that by how many series the site holds, which is a bit over 900. That means they are paying around $900k at minimum for a single season of each show for the length of that contract, whatever it may be. Some animes only have 1 season, some I believe have over 30, so the price they pay per contract term could exceed $45 million per term.

These are all rough numbers from what I could find online about the costs of licensing and the 904 shows I see on their site now. I'm guestimating the total amount of seasons that are currently available on the site.

Now the numbers. Crunchyroll just exceeded 1 million paid members this February. 1000000 * 6.95 = $6,950,000 profit a month just from premium membership. Seems like a lot, but if they are paying over $45 million per contract, assuming contract lasts for 1 year, it's costing Crunchyroll ~$3,750,000 per month just in anime (again, could be much more, don't know exactly how many seasons there are in total of the costs they fully pay, using estimates from what I could find online). So, 6,950,000 - 3,750,000 = 3,200,000 a month. Sounds like profit, Yeah? Well, then you have to do it all over again for the licensing of all their manga, however much that costs, then the licensing of their live action dramas, however much that costs, and then you have to consider hosting fees, server fees, data fees, etc etc.

Crunchyroll really doesn't make a lot of money as profit here. Unfortunately there's no way to get you the exact profit they make per year, as they are a private company, so those details aren't available to the public.

And just to be more clear on licensing costs, here is a court released list of licensing costs for ADV back in 2012.

I want to know why I get splash ads on a site that I'm paying to use.

That's what is frustrating to me.

I agree that they show ads. But I think its getting out of hand.

for example, to watch a 22 min episode of anime I had to watch the making of a russian pop singer music video plus the regular ads. It lasted for about 10-15 minutes, that's insane

For the record im agnostic but I feel in american atheism there is a real streak of arrogance among alot of atheists. Alot of them feel like atheism makes them feel inherently superior.

I'm okay with ads. That is the price of being a free user. My issue is that I can't watch the show at all because the ads are looping for hours at a time.

What's going on with all of the ads is that it's time to reinstall that ad blocker. I only Crunchyroll on the computer, though the ads on the phone aren't hellishly long. Hulu is worse, so at least give Crunchyroll a break. It's like they are competing though.

There's always a price for anything that "Free". Honestly I don't care about the ads so long as they load and don't crash my browser.

Has anyone noticed that the ads are much louder than the actual show? This happens on TV a lot too, I've noticed. I'm sure its not just me. I have to hit the mute button just because I don't want to adjust the volume every 5 minutes.I understand people want to sell something but don't blow out my ear drums.
