So, who here writes fanfic?

I know it has a bad reputation in general, but there are some good ones. Sometimes it can be fun to come up with them...

my head is full of elaborate AUs and what-ifs for all of my favorite series, including crossovers (ask me about my Code Geass/ Love Live crossover), but I rarely write them down... I have a few times, though. Mostly Code Geass.

So what fandoms have you written things for? Read for? Thought about writing fanfic for? What have you always wanted to see in a fanfic? General thoughts?

I actually used to belong (about five years ago) to some LotR fanbase/website that was totally epic. It had EVERYTHING LotR...

Anyway, I wrote tons of fanfiction for that, and so many crossovers between that and Star Wars, or other movies I enjoyed...

Though now I focus more on screenplay writing/creating my own world/plot/characters/etc.

I don't know if this counts but I have an ongoing fanfic universe in my head. It's basically a crossover of all my favorite characters, whether anime or not. I once tried to write down a summary of the plot but it sounded really stupid on paper. Plus almost everyone's really OOC, especially the main characters. Basically it's a universe that only I could enjoy, but that's what imagination is for, right?

XD I did something similar with my Lego universe (until I sold them)...it's so amazing, isn't it? To have a complete story in your head of this fantastical world!

I agree! The human imagination is truly an amazing thing. Also, have you ever seen "The Lego Movie"? it's basically a crossover universe featuring a bunch of Lego characters. I've heard great things about the movie, but I can't watch it because it makes me feel motion sickness.

And I love the world I've created. I put my whole heart & soul into it. Sometimes the ideas I get make me so happy and excited that I get dizzy, almost like an "emotional high". Other times, I feel really frustrated to the point of tears when an idea comes to me but it doesn't fit into the rest of the story. But no matter the highs and lows, I still love it and I'm proud of it. I just wish I had the art & writing skills to be able to make a decent manga out of it.

I have a Code Geass AU idea that's like... if Lelouch's mother didn't get killed, and then she stops the war by getting them to put Lelouch and Suzaku in an arranged marriage. So their fathers agree to it because they think those two will hate each other... but then Lelouch and Suzaku fall in love, and the war is successfully averted. So then they're living in Japan, and going to an international school with the same group from the anime, except that everyone knows they're royalty, and Euphie is with them, too. Meanwhile, Lelouch is still planning to take the throne.

Cue crossovers with everything. Case Closed. Love Live. yes.

I like the idea of Clovis surviving and being close with Lelouch. He'd basically be like a second Milly, but cuddlier. <3

Oh, yes! I loved the movie! It was actually made me crack up numerous times XD Sorry about the motion sickness for you :/

I definitely agree about the "emotional high" of worldbuilding! I would feel the same about my art/writing skills, but like I said, I used Legos XD haha...though recently I had to learn more about writing, so I could jot down my world whenever I think of it.

I have a looong time ago around the age of 13. I'm too embarrassed to even think about it. Fanfiction is enjoyable though.

Fanfic writer here!

I enjoy it for the challenge of trying to stay in character while placing the characters in entirely new situations. Like being used as tools in a game between demons.

I write a AU scenario for Kyoukai no Rinne and here is how it goes:

Spirted-Away Human: “Hey, you can’t spirit me away; that’s illegal!”
Yokai: “What are you saying? We are yokai who are not under the law of your world. Also, we are conducting free trade so the law of yokai world don’t apply either. To resolve any more possible legal issues, we apply for spirit-away licenses in a shady backdoor deal with your corrupt mayor. Your mayor is a very useful person; he is so useless that he lost the support of his own citizen and now depend on our support so he is very cooperative. And don’t worry about being the only human slave; eventually, we will completely pollute your earth for economic progress and make your planet uninhabitable so all your fellow humans will sell their freedom to get survival service from our supernatural powers. This is going to be a win-win situation; your human species can survive and we can replace our high-maintenance workers with low-maintenance slaves.”
Spirted-Away Human: “How is that economic progress? It sounds more like legalized crimes.”
Yokai: “That is how the universe work; the economy can only progress when criminal investments can occur without interference from the law. If we gain more profit from the investment, then we can use the profit to make more investment.”
Spirted-Away Human: “Well at least I can be with yokai who take the form of a beautiful young human girls.”
Yokai: “Actually, we are embracing our secret transgender sub-culture to seduce human men; we are actually male over the age of 100. Our yokai race forbid cross-dressing but no other people notice our transgression so it is not a crime. Now that you had fallen for traps, you had now lost your manliness and you will continue your life as a cross-dressing slave with a homosexual master.”

Generally I write fanfic for every category I read them in. I'm not very good at finishing long stories so lately I've limited myself to oneshots...It's fun when the ideas are flowing, but writer's block and the sense of complacency when you get when you're not working on something sometimes set in.

I generate a lot of AU/headcanon/crossover ideas but never bring them all to fruition...so I have a lot of dead fics...

As for what I look for in fics, basically everything I look for in stories - basic grammar and spelling (at a level that is mostly, if not fully, understandable), no obvious OOCness (unless there is a previous warning) and proper plot progression (unless of course, the fic is meant to be plotless because the summary says so). Originality isn't prized so much because fanfic writers tend to do similar plots.

Not a big fan of fanfic myself. Generally if I want to write anything, I don't want it to take from any other universe. I'll do it all myself.

Oh, yeah. I write 'em all the time. But it's mostly just self-insert stuff. Y'know, I put myself and my buddies into the universe and write things out the way I think it would go. It's just a hobby.
