People in general have never been united. It's always us vs them.

John Winger: Cut it out! Cut it out! Cut it out! The hell's the matter with you? Stupid! We're all very different people. We're not Watusi. We're not Spartans. We're Americans, with a capital 'A', huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We're the underdog. We're mutts! Here's proof: his nose is cold! But there's no animal that's more faithful, that's more loyal, more loveable than the mutt. Who saw "Old Yeller?" Who cried when Old Yeller got shot at the end?
[raises his hand]
John Winger: [Sarcastically] Nobody cried when Old Yeller got shot? I'm sure.
[hands are reluctantly raised]
John Winger: I cried my eyes out. So we're all dogfaces, we're all very, very different, but there is one thing that we all have in common: we were all stupid enough to enlist in the Army. We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us - we're soldiers. But we're American soldiers! We've been kicking ass for 200 years!

Hell, the world was fairly unified after 9/11. But instead of a global effort against terrorism we got "Lets invade Iraq, lawl".

I'm mostly asking this question as I don't quite know the answer: there are quite a few arguments saying that there have been eras where we, as a nation, have banded together for one reason or another. Other arguments poke holes in that kind of thinking and declare that the United States has never experienced national unity. I doubt the answer is, in any way, a simple black or white one, but I'm curious as to what people here have to say.

When we don't know what someone else's life is like, we tend to imagine it is a lot like our own.

But since we have gotten more and more comfortable in recent decades telling the world about our very different lives and lifestyles, we're now being constantly smacked in the face by how UNLIKE us everyone else is.

It's hard to feel unity like that. But the thing is, nothing really changed - we were always this different, we just didn't talk about it so much. So the unity we had in the past was just a pleasant fiction, anyway.

We've never really all been united. But at times, it has felt that way, because we all agreed on something... and we didn't talk about much else.

Well, I mean the name "United States" already shows we're united.

Its only "United States" because the full name "United In Lingering Resentment For One Another Across Political Lines States" is too long to fit on a map.

Lawl,

Just pointing out facts, sorry if they bug you. Not like it's totally off the wall to bring up Clinton since she is seen stumbling and bumbling where ever you look today. Maybe if she was honest about being sick instead of lying about it for the past two weeks, it would be less of in issue.
Feel free to add me to Hillary's basket of deplorables , but I'm immune to liberal labels. lawl lawl lawl
