So a question to those in the workforce - how do you otaku in the workplace? Do you have a desk adorned with (obviously SFW) figures, or an anime wallpaper on your workstation? Also, are any of your coworkers/bosses/kouhai into anime?

So I kind of lucked out I think (and I know, you're thinking "Oh God not another one of Cliff's crazy life stories" but I swear this one is actually kind of awesome). I recently started working as a data center technician for a data center owned by a VERY BIG corporation whose product I am using right now, and if you are reading this on a PC then you are probably using their stuff as well. Hint: name starts with "M". and ends with "T". Also, they're all about windows.

I finished my onboarding and training period last week, and this week they put me on my shift assignment, which is Wednesday through Saturday, graveyard shift (from 2130 at night to 0800 the following morning). The only other person on this shift is my shift lead - basically the tech that manages all the other techs in a shift, and reports to the site services manager aka the boss. So I had met the guy in passing before, and had heard quite a lot about him from the other techs - mostly positive, so I was looking forward to meeting him. My first impression was that he reminded me a bit of the comedian Gabriel Iglesias - rotund, Latino, and an absolute riot. Seriously this guy is FUNNY. He's also super nice as well. He told me he sees our professional relationship as more teammates than supervisor-subordinate, and has also gone out of his way to teach me how to avoid some of the simple mistakes - such as leaving a server rack unlocked - that management takes very seriously and could - and already have, apparently, to his last few techs - result in what we in the industry refer to as an RGE - a resume-generating-event (essentially a cockup that gets you fired)

So I'm already liking this guy. Not only is he really awesome to have as a boss, but because we're on graveyard shifts there's not a soul in the place except for him, me, a couple of security guards, and of course the angry Indians on Skype (not Native Americans but people from India) pelting us with troubleshooting tickets that are quite definitely priority 3 and not priority 1 like they claim. So while we do have to get enough work done to satisfy our bosses, we don't exactly have them looking over our shoulder. But then I found out the one thing about him that has now cemented him as my all-time favorite person I've ever worked with. It was during my lunch break, I had my phone logged onto the DC's guest wifi and was on the Funimation app, watching Last Exile - Fam the Silver Wing on my iPhone, when he looks over my shoulder and asks what I was watching. So I told him, and to my eternal surprise, the next 10 minutes was me and this 55-year-old guy completely geeking out over anime. Seriously! He said he had several terabyte drives worth of stuff he's gotten (albeit through less than legal means, but hush), and when I name dropped some of the shows that I had been into recently - Macross Delta, Last Exile, Eureka Seven AO, MS Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, the new Berserk, the Gundam 0098 remake, et cetera - he had seen or was watching almost all of them. He says he got into it watching with his younger nephew, and now he's more or less an otaku himself, but he doesn't have anyone he can really share it with. Now I'm half-wondering if the site services manager actually planned this and set me up with him for this very reason.

So yeah, I am now go to be a total otaku at work now because my shift lead is one as well. But I want to hear other stories, so share yours!

My leisure and work life are separate. Not all jobs have room for that.

Almost no jobs have room for that.
Also, your level 1 tech support is awful, level 2 thinks everyone has a T3.

I don't take personal stuff to work.

Although my job generates enough random artefacts so that anyone coming to my office can pick something up, look at it and ask "what's this?"

I don't.. About the only personal items I have are a couple framed photos of my dogs, and a coffee thermos.

I get along well with all my coworkers but I keep them carefully at arms' length, so they know very little about my interests or opinions.

A couple of things. Supervisor and a hand full of co workers are into anime. Mostly mainstream stuff such as DBZ and AoT. Manager had some nendos by her computer. Of Akari from Yuruyuri. Thought they aren't all into it such as watching seasonal stuff it's pretty great knowing that I can talk to them about stuff like this.

One day if I ever get an office with my own desk, I will definitely bring in some figures or plushies to adorn my area.

The jobs I've had so far never gave me a desk, but I keep otaku-ish things with me usually, like keychains on my keys or purse, a dorky wallet, and an anime-related phone case.

And I've never really had a big otaku fan as a coworker. For some reason, all of the anime fans I have met at my jobs were people I wasn't crazy about...

I only work with three people that watch anime. I just found out about one of them today actually, going to ask her to lunch monday and nerd out for a while if shes down. I work in a dealership shop so really no place to put figures but us techs do have the odd sticker or two. It mostly consist of us having 5 10 minute conversations between cars or on lunch break.

I have a Samsung Tab 3 - 8" screen. I watch anime during my breaks, and on my commute on the train, to and from work (the stuff from my personal library. See my profile to read a list of what I've watched). Sometimes my co-workers look over my shoulder to look at what I'm watching, and sometimes I talk to them about it. Some of my co-workers watch anime, too, but not at work.

I'm not in the work force, but I don't bring my geeky side to school. I don't let anyone outside of my family know that I am into this kind of stuff (I'm not really proud of it but it is what it is)

I work in a bookstore, so we're all some kind of geek. I have a few coworkers that also watch anime and we make sure to talk about the new stuff that's airing that we're watching, or warn about what not to watch and that sort of thing. Lately I've been getting everyone into Mr. Robot (the western show) so that's pretty cool. We have some flash drives floating around to get people caught up.

Nope. Don't get to do that. My job also doesn't have room for that. Just work and then I come home. I only watch anime at home. so yea.
