One episode is not content enough to leave a true review.

I have personally noticed that I can't really tell whether I like a show until I've seen four episodes. It takes that long to have a decent handle on the characters and their interactions.

However, I can tell when I do NOT like a show pretty quickly. The problem is that my REASONS for not liking a show are largely irrelevant to anyone else - I might think a given character (like Monkey D. Luffy from "One Piece") is absolutely insufferable and I can't stand watching him, but when I look around, I tend to find that there sure are a lot of people who LIKE that character.

So my negative review, no matter how thoughtful and well-written, simply isn't that useful to other people. No matter how much I might try to write a negative review that accurately identifies what I don't like and why I don't like it, so it actually helps people decide whether they would like the show, I simply don't see it helping anyone at all.

And I don't think it's anything I'm doing wrong - I think it's just an inherent limitation of the negative review as a concept.

I know exactly what you mean. I can typically tell first episode if I will actually like a show or not. I typically give a show the 3 episode try.

But, if I don't finish a show for whatever the reason, I don't write any sort of negative review because I did not finish it.

Some shows get better over time, some get worse. Some have final episodes that can ruin an entire season or series. you just never know. This is why I wish more people wouldn't write reviews unless they truly finished a show.

Serious question:

The 26th episode of the third season ruins the entire storyline of a show by copping out and doing something "safe." The 77 episodes before that are great.

Would you honestly rather not watch any of it?

Because I can think of four shows right off the bat that screwed the pooch in the last episode, or at least a later one, and not one of them is a show I wish I had never watched. In fact, I really LIKED those shows, or I wouldn't have cared about that turd of a later episode they squeezed out. So it just seems like a "baby and bathwater" scenario to me.

I guess I'm just different. I've watched quite a number of shows where my impressions changed after 5 or 6 episodes, and most of those shows don't get better. I've gone as far as 20 episodes into a show simply because I thought I was going to like the show early on, but it just grew worse and worse until I couldn't take it anymore. To be fair, I can't say for sure whether I would've heeded the advice of a stranger who wrote a negative review, but I think it's reasonable to assume that someone could potentially benefit from one, or at least an honest mixture of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

That happens to me, too, but the real phenomenon I'm talking about here is that even if I've watched three episodes, I still don't know if I like the show. I know I don't DISLIKE it. But there's still a substantial chance I'll decide I don't care.

"Air Master" and "Zombie Loan" come to mind, as does the second season of "Chaika: Coffin Princess." The premises are fine. The characters are fine. The plotline is fine. I just got six to eight episodes into the series and went "oh, wait, I don't care."

There's nothing WRONG with them. I wouldn't give them a bad review. I just can't really give them a good one, either. And if you asked me why I didn't care and stopped watching, I'd just kind of stare off into the distance and shrug. I can't articulate a reason. I don't KNOW why I don't care. I just... don't care.

Sometimes that happens really far in, and I don't know whether the show changed or I did. I got to episode 72 of "Fairy Tail," and then I decided I don't care. Why? I don't know. I'm just not interested in watching episodes 73 and onward. After 72 episodes, I certainly wouldn't say I don't like the show. And maybe I'm only ten or fifteen episodes from starting to like it again. But man, I sure don't want to watch those ten or fifteen episodes. I'd rather rewatch something I enjoyed, like "Soul Eater" or "Girls High" or "Bokurano."

If I'm interested in reading them I always flip through all the reviews and I deliberately search for the 1 and 2 star reviews because I know the "gushers" will overlook any flaws / problems with a series.

"but you seem to think that negative reviews which are unpopular need to be featured on the top page... basing this on the made-up fact that people are arbitrarily voting down opinions with scores lower than 4/5..."

You lack reading comprehension.

"you want to be able to suppress other more popular reviews by featuring your favorite unpopular reviews on the top page instead of the ones that are currently there"

No. Stop there. Just no. Stop trying to shove words in my mouth.

But I'll leave that there. It's really not worth these minute finger strokes to re-explain it all to you.

Guess I better stick to the reviews section so I can censor your opinion.

Agreed. Just get rid of the thumbs up/down function altogether, it's useless in a blind community like this one.

I also don't understand why some shows get so many 5 stars when it's clearly bad. Surely, people here are not that blind to not be able to state a few flaws in the series, for example, I love this show, but this and this could be improved. But most of the 5 stars reviews you read will be something like, OMG WATCH THIS, ITS A MUST WATCH. Those are the useless reviews, but will get so many thumbs up.

Might as well. Your hypocrisy and self-righteousness cards flew out the window.

Here is what could perhaps be considered a counterexample.

I'm curious what shows you were talking about, though, if you can provide any examples.
