I don't understand why virginity matters if they're trying to provide incentives for marriage and child rearing. Being a virgin shouldn't affect whether you desire to marry or start a family. It's just an old fashioned notion of purity.

Exactly. Being a virgin has NOTHING to do with it. What is their economy like right now? That could be a major factor. Also aren't a lot of Japanese people very reserved? Or not so much anymore? Maybe people in Japan just prefer being single. I know with the state of the economy more and more Americans are choosing to remain single. I really get sick of people frowning upon virgins. I don't care if one's still a virgin at 16 or 26 or freaking 56. That's their choice. Some people really do want to save themselves for marriage. Others are shy or may have a hard time relating to others and still some may not want to have sex period. On the other side of the token there's nothing wrong with having sex either. Both are okay and it's up to you to decide which is or isn't right for you.

Japanese people are absolutely beautiful so maybe it's hard for us to imagine why so many of them are single. What we see as exotic beauty is probably pretty average to them. There's just a lot of factors involved here and no amount of incentives are going to change their declining birth rates until they get to the root of the problem. I know less people want to have children when the economy is not in a good place. Also each new generation (and this goes for us too) is becoming more and more empowered and have more and more control over their lives. Many are choosing careers over marriage and a lot of people are putting off having families until they're more successful (which just seems like a smart idea to me).

I'm not sure whether I believe in these online statistics anymore.

Wasn't there a statistic that says Japanese people have more sex per year than the rest of the world. How do you even measure these things.

By placing a web cam and having a live feed in the home of every Japanese person? It's purely for scientific data mind you......not because I want to watch a lot of hot Japanese people having sex.....yeah science, that's it.

Just a point of contention, but Japanese people aren't 'absolutely beautiful'. They are, on the whole, pretty ordinary looking.

The world as a whole, yes.

Not sure you should weed out an entire nationality which seems to be the way it's trending at this rate. Literally, Japanese people will cease to exist.

Birth rates have already declined in western countries and falling for some developing countries. Why should populations always rise? Most are waiting longer before they even decide if they want children at all. The problem with wanting to wait until you're successful before deciding on children is that the way we measure success is changing, the goalpost keeps moving. Bodies however don't fall in line with that. Women have a set fertile time. Men do as well though their fertile window is longer. Some women have got to mid 30s and just start trying. The leading IVF specialist in the world has said this is just too late to be starting then finding out that you have a problem procreating. That's when fertility starts to decrease. That's why so many are looking for fertility help to conceive instead of those that had known fertility problems since they were late teens to 20s.

Maybe because the girls are terrified of/not into the things in hentai and the guys think they need to do that stuff but can't or they worry about their performance...

Good point, the world population is already high enough. If some of us choose to drop out of the traditional family/rearing kids model its not necessarily a bad thing.

Although Japan's and America's situations are completely different.
In America people are having less kids, but young people definitely aren't having less sex.
In Japan a record number of people have reported that they have no interest in sex, both men and women.
Sounds like a completely different phenomenon.

The fertility window, yeah its definitely creating some different types of relationships here in the states. I see more and more young women going out with older men, probably has a lot to do with almost nobody having true financial stability in their twenties anymore and creditialism pushing people to remain in school until a much later age than in the past.

It's not really a bad thing, but I think they are worried because the population will decrease.

The oppressive nature of the Japanese lifestyle leads to people shutting down completely, not surprised it has lead to this as well.

So what we're saying is that the anime depiction of a complete lack of physical affection in many Japanese relationships is actually a de facto representation of Japanese sexuality? Terrifying, yet oddly humorous.
