I remain confident my country will do the right thing in November. But even if Trump does win, we can just kick him out in 2020.

A ver si hago enfadar a votantes de Hillary.

Whoa, wait, no. This isn't a serious thread I was just joking. But if you want to talk seriously about it, here we go. I don't understand why you can't take criticism from Germans seriously because of what their ancestors did 71 years ago. We are learning about this stuff in school, we have to visit concentration camps and there are countless documentaries, articles etc. we're constantly confronted with. We have learned from it and I for example wasn't even born when that happend. So why can't you take my opinion seriously?

I'm not talking about you specifically, but rather the overall demeanor of non-Americans toward Americans, which is extremely hypocritical. If the overall demeanor and delivery of criticism from non-Americans directed toward Americans was delivered in less insufferably overbearing, self-righteous air of superiority, it would be much more likely the recipient would graciously accept the advice and take it into due consideration. But when advice is given by someone (or a collective group) who has done the same things *or worse*, who deliver the "advice" as a sermon about how horrible the recipient of the advice is, while failing to acknowledge that they have made the same mistakes, then you're just going to make them think you're an arrogant ass-hat.

If person A sees a tree with colorful fruit (which happens to be poisonous) on it and plucks a piece to eat, do you think he is more likely to reconsider his actions if person B says:

1) "Oh my god, you are such a fucking idiot. Only an idiot would eat that fruit. Of course, all Person A ethnic/national/interest group people are idiots, so obviously you are an idiot." (never mind that person A saw person B eat a piece last week)
or
2) "Hey, man, I think those are poisonous. I ate one a few days ago and it made me SO sick. You probably shouldn't eat it."

And regardless of whether person A does or does not change his course of action, which one do you think will result in person A thinking person B is an asshole, and not, in the future, helping out person B?

*You* may not have said it, but several other people in this thread have done exactly that: berated the US about long-past transgressions, from a position of alleged moral superiority, while failing to acknowledge their own nation/ ethnicity has been responsible for exactly the same transgressions.

It is hypocrisy, plain and simple.

A penchant for revisionist history is one of the reasons you guys give the rest of us a headache sometimes. -.-

But Obama literally did just that. Congress didn't agree with the budget plan he wanted, so he arbitrarily shut down government functions that had already been funded (and in some cases, required no funding at all) in order to anger the population so the anger could be redirected against his political opponents. That's kind of a tantrum. It is, at the very least, extremely petty and counterproductive.

I'm not so confident "the right thing" is as obvious as you make it out to be. I would rather have an unpopular and disempowered Trump in office than a criminal, manipulative Clinton.

The below pretty much sums up my thoughts on the subject:

Why is there a Nazi anime frog tank in this thread and why are so few people concerned by it's presence?

Reading through these comments is awesome. Here in America if we say "If they are immigrating into our country they need to learn our language and laws", but instead those of us who say this are called racist.

First off, you're a racist, second off, the best Tits and Ass movies came out of Hollywood in the 1980's under Reagan.

I'm not even sure what to say to that. It's like you're posting from an alternate reality.

I will, however, say your lack of understanding of how your own government operates alarms me greatly.

Fortunately, his control is extremely limited. You think Trump won't be able to torture, or that he at least won't be able to circumvent the laws limiting the behaviour of armed service personnel or hold and torture people not suspected to have any actionable intelligence to offer. It's happened before.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2014/dec/09/cia-report-torture-program-disarray
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/aug/25/guantanamo-detainees-captured-pakistan-afghanistan

You think Trump won't be able to kill civilians deliberately. My Lai and No Gun Ri say otherwise.

Edit: My Lai was a bad example.

You think Trump won't be able to take advantage of national worries about terrorism to expand the executive's power to monitor and detain people without warrants. It's happened before. What do you think passage of the PATRIOT Act was (not that Clinton's better here since she voted for it)?

You think Trump won't be able to engage in military action without Congressional approval. It's happened before. Obama did that in Syria. Bill Clinton did that in Kosovo. Ronald Reagan did that in Grenada. Johnson did it in Laos and Cambodia.

You think Trump won't be able to get his Supreme Court picks approved, that Congressional Republicans will take a principled stand and join Democrats against him if he offers up someone repugnant. Donald Trump used a combination of the media, his supporters' enthusiasm, and bribery to either drive any opponent he faced in the Republican party into halfhearted support or silence, with the remaining vocal, dedicated voices constituting the "Never Trump" movement having essentially no impact on the race. The reason people started saying they'd act against Trump if sent to Congress wasn't because of a principled stance, but because at the time and in those locations it was politically expedient to try to disconnect from Trump given his national and state level poll numbers. Democrats are unlikely to take the House back and can't necessarily even count on the Senate. Of the six races labeled "competitive" by Real Clear Politics only two are not currently being led by the Republican, and one of those remaining two is a stalemate. What, Trump's suddenly not going to be able to harness anti-establishment anger and enthusiastic support among his base to wrangle Republicans into giving him his justices (or at least into getting out of the way)? We're finally witnessing "peak Trump"? I've heard that before, and it hasn't happened yet.

The record shows that US Presidents can do things like torture, engage in mass surveillance, incarcerate people without charge or trial, kill civilians in war zones, and engage in unilateral military actions that either cannot be or are not stopped by Congress or the courts. It shows that, in the wake of concerns about terrorism, Presidents are even able to get the legislature on board with these kind of things. I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the argument that Trump won't be able to do the things he's said he'll do.

Finally, if you want to blame someone for the 2013 shutdown you can direct your complaints to Ted Cruz, the House Freedom Caucus, and conservative activist groups, all of which insisted on continuously putting poison pill language into funding resolutions until the system crashed. They gambled on your view taking dominance and everyone glaring at Democrats for shutting down the government in order to keep the PPACA funded, and they lost on that gamble. Instead people were upset that Republicans were willing to shut the government down in order to defund the PPACA.
