Kill la Kill. It's made by Studio TRIGGER, which is an animation studio made up of mostly people who used to work for Studio Gainax, who were the ones who did Gurren Lagann. And no, it's not a mecha one, but it has the same crazy story telling and humor in it that Gurren Lagann does. There are even small references to Gurren Lagann in it as well, lol. It's a fun romp with a good message, and it's a totally awesome show.

And if you haven't watched it yet, Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, which is an anime that has all the things that you mentioned that you liked in it actually. It's another awesome show.

Another one you might like is called Erased, which is a mystery, sort of time traveling show. I can't say too much about it without spoiling it.

All of the shows I mentioned are here on Crunchyroll too.

Kaiji.

Its an anime that's mostly centered around gambling. Every single gamble in the series has extremely high stakes where a loss would often times end up with the Kaiji losing his life either figuratively or literally. Most of the time the games played in Kaiji are straightforward and often times created by the author himself so you don't need any previous knowledge to enjoy the show unlike Akagi (both are by the same author). What I especially love about the series that Kaiji is the only "necessary" character and even then he's still able to win or lose.

The only downside is that there are almost no female characters though within the context of plot it makes sense. The art is also a bit strange at first, but after a few episodes I feel in love with the look of the show. Overall its a great anime that I would recommend to most especially those who want to watch a modern anime, but are tired of most modern genres

Honorable mentions are Gintama (A great show that can do toilet humor, battle scenes, and tear inducing drama all in one episode and can still do all three better than most anime), School Live! (good mix of drama/comedy. Different take on the "moe" genre.), and Noucome (Unique concept, but still a guilty pleasure. Thought I'd throw an odd ball in here)

Two classic slice of life romance comedies:

Kimagure Orange Road
Maison Ikkoku

Can't call yourself a fan of the genre if you haven't seen those

I think some of my favorites are the works that Yoshitoshi Abe worked on.

Like for instance:
Serial Experiments Lain
Haibane Renmei

You almost always know he was involved once you see the artwork. He's the only artist that seems to like the idea of a character that cuts their own hair and has messed up hair... lol (I don't get it either but, he works on some good shows)

Someone else mentioned Satoshi Kon's work... I second that motion.
Perfect Blue
Paprika
Paranoia Agent

Slice of life
Demno no Coil

Um, I wouldn't call Dennō Coil, which is what I'm assuming you meant by that name, a slice of life anime. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but from what I know from the show, and from watching the two episodes a long time ago, it's more of a science fiction type anime. Unless of course you meant to put it in the mystery category above the slice of life line.

Mystery is one it's genres. Now that I give it some thought it's probably it's main genre but it has a fair bit of slice of life.

Ah, I see. Well, both Wikipedia and Anime News Network list it as a science fiction, adventure and mystery anime with no mention of it being slice of life, so that's why I got confused. Of course, shows like that almost always have regular life situations in them to make them more believable, like for instance with Steins;Gate. So, yes, there is slice of life stuff in them, but I wouldn't mark it as that for their main genre.

I guess because of what the show is at the start the slice of life stuff stood out more so that's why when I was doing that section I thought of it.
MAL and Hummingbird list slice of life as one of the genres.
