Hello! I hope this is the right place for this sort of thing.

I'm trying to recall a certain short story that I read ages ago in school. Unfortunately, I remember almost nothing about it, and most of the information I think I know about it is unreliable. Here's the basics of it though .

1. I remember the story heavily featuring snow. I feel like it might have been about someone lost in the cold or someone finding another person who was lost in the cold - or something like that, at least.
2. I also recall there being some sort of spiritual aspect to it. More specifically, I think one of the characters turned out to be an angel or a spirit or something like that. I feel very strongly that an angel was involved, but that information is unreliable.
3. I also feel like the story may have been of Russian origin. Tolstoy in particular sticks out in my mind, but sadly, that information may also be unreliable.

I realize this is incredibly vague, but if anyone could toss out any ideas - even if they seem way off base - I'd be most appreciative!

Thank you for the response!

I'm fairly sure it wasn't Snow Queen, but that does seem like an interesting story nonetheless. The Snow Queen feels more like a traditional fairy tale now that I read it. I feel like the story I'm trying to remember is far simpler.

I feel like it was a "touched by an angel" sort of thing about a guy helping out a person freezing in the snow amd it turns out they were an angel... or maybe it was about a guy freezing to death in the snow who was saved by an angel? Something cliche and parable-y like that

But thanks again. Any ideas are extremely helpful. Plus I get more stories to read .

Thanks very much for the reply

I've always liked little tales like that - especially ones involving human interactions with animals (with The Nightingale and the Rose being one of my favorites). Although The Crane Wife wasn't the story I was thinking of, but it was a nice little story regardless.

However for those interested, I did manage to finally find it!

Turns out it was a short story called "What Men Live By" by Tolstoy. After re-reading it, I think the reason I couldn't find it was because I was so fixated on the snow aspect of it, when in reality it was actually fairly minor. It was also far more spiritual than I initially remembered. I guess when I was younger, my mind just latched onto the very beginning and end of the story and basically forgot the rest of it

But thank you both for the help anyway. I think in the future I may make a more general thread asking for short story recommendations. I find that I rarely have the patience to sit through a whole novel, but I had quite a time picking up random short stories trying to find what I was looking for.
