I literally just stumbled on to it while channel surfing late one night. I ran across Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim and said "Whoa. This is different. I think I like it."

I think youtube spat a recommendation for Something Witty's SAO parody, probably due to watching comedy channels. I watched it, thought it was a work of genius despite never seeing SAO and went from there. I saw a recommended list vid from Digibro and got Spice and Wolf to run and discovered that "animated" wasn't mutually exclusive with "good story".

Job done youtube recommendations algorithm.

Not particularly. I watched anime when I was really young and didn't know what it was back then, but when I actually got into it for myself I already knew what it was and where it came from. I started buying manga from the bookstore prior to watching a lot of shows though.

Wow. I must be the only one who thought GT was okay.

So when I was in college, a group of friends and I were hanging out in a common room, playing board games and talking. One of us had a rubik's cube (this will be important later). A random drunk guy walked in, and he thought it was really cool that we were all hanging out together (he was a happy drunk). He saw that we had a mixed up rubik's cube, and he said that even while drunk he could complete it in less than a minute. We gave it to him, and before starting it he pulled a necklace out from behind his shirt.

It was a core drill from Gurren Lagann, and one other person from our group recognized it. They started shouting the quotes (Yours is the drill that will pierce the heavens, believe in the me that believes in you, etc.). The drunk guy solved the cube in about 45 seconds, and he was joking and making us laugh the whole time.

Later on, that group watched the first episode of Gurren Lagann together. Most of us laughed and were entertained, but I liked it so much that I finished the show. This not only got me into Gurren Lagann, but also pretty much into anime.

That's a true story.

Toriyama officially made GT "Not Canon", so let that sink in.
