scenario 1: no moderation
"youtube community sucks because there's no moderation, so most comments are not worth reading. too many trolls / people spamming referral links"

scenario 2: Youtube introduces a way for the community to moderate itself:
"Youtube is promoting tyranny! trolls should be able to have their voices heard!"

we're stuck with either scenario 1 or 2. Youtube just can't please people.

Scenario 3:

Have a paid and impartial moderation staff that is adequately staffed itself. Prevent demonetization and removal until appropriate steps are taken to verify claims.

They're basically telling the community: "Do our job for us, for free, oh . . . and feel free to go on a power trip because that's all you're getting out of this".

Well, I'll say one thing. Youtube has far more faith in its community than I do. -.-

Also, one more time folks: Moderation of a privately owned service is not censorship. So untwist your panties and put the Orwell away.

let's be honest here - considering that there are over a billion of youtube videos, each of them with chat feature, and thousands more videos are generated per second, each video having 100+ comments (some over 1k comments), they would need to hire a ton of moderators - and even then it'll probably not be as effective and it's questionable whether it would actually work, given the volume of content that would need to be moderated. this is even assuming all mods would be impartial. hiring people also costs money, so trying to get professionals to do the work is impractical and ineffective. hiring too few mods would result in almost no moderation, while hiring too many would still not be enough and would be costly.

edit: let's not even forget the several live videos, which would need an active moderator.

edit2: should i also point out that people are complaining for a service they get for free..? and it's not like Youtube is forcing 10min+ worth of ads for people to watch a 5 min video (like CR cough cough)

I find it kind of funny that people are so quick to say that supposed "SJWs" are going to be all over this when you know it's actually going to be going both ways. It's going to be a mass false flag fest between both sides of that argument with each side trying to blow up the others videos. I mean, do you really think that Anita Sarkeesians videos aren't going to be nuked by mass flags as well?

Pretty much this. I'm not really on board with community moderation, but saying that Google should just hire enough people to actively monitor and moderate Youtube is, frankly, kind of silly. I do believe that automated or community moderation needs some form of intelligent higher level over sight (which it currently doesn't have) but running the entire system on paid active moderators just isn't possible.

If youtube stops having the type of things you like watching then it's time to move on.

I bet if I put up a forum for the sole purpose of letting you register on it, and ban you after your first post, you would create a thread here on CR about how some villainous SJW stomped all over your freedom of speech. In reality, however, there's no such thing as a "public domain", and you're just acting out on how big of a whiny powerless derp you are.

No that would just be you being a dick to everyone and wasteful of cash as it would cost about $100/year to have a reliable web hosting. But congratulation for not getting what's bad about it

It would be paid staff for review of flagged items, specifically those that are monetized as they impact livelihoods. Some automation of comments would be the middle ground. If they can't do that then it's time to admit YouTube is a failure and impractical for today and should have the plug pulled.

The service is not free. They keep track of your demographics for monetization. If it's not profitable to run then it was a pipe dream that should fold. Pretty simple. They can't say they advocate free speech and introduce a tool contradictory with it expecting to be taken seriously. Pure garbage.
