Just because you don't have a a physical relationship with it doesn't mean the fandom isn't real.

Seriously dude. If your actions are controlled by your hobbies then you need help. You're a human, they're supposed to be discrete units, not a hive mind (or so I've heard from intelligence briefings).

Becoming an Otaku if you like anime isn't a definite for most people, but in your case it sounds like the publishing companies will make the decision for you.

Enjoy

I think it depends on how you visualize 'fandom'. The word 'fandom', to me, brings up images of people going batshit over Steven Universe or the new Doctor Who doctors, or Supernatural - that sort of mode. The crazy obsessive fans that know every single fact and every tidbit of information on one specific thing or a few specific things. I don't think that is particularly inevitable, I believe it depends on the person's personality.

I could be looked at as a major fan, but I don't have a 'fandom'. I like anime, but in that I like a lot of different things and there isn't one I obsess over. If you looked at my figure collection I have a lot of Vocaloid stuff and a lot of idols ([email protected] taking a major part of the collection by itself), but I wouldn't consider myself in the 'fandom' specifically. If you asked me anything about either [email protected] show, I probably couldn't remember it. I've never played the games associated with the series. I love Vocaloid, but I don't know many producers. While I splurge on merch often, I probably could only name a handful of songs off the top of my head because while I have 500gigs or so of Vocaloid mp3's I don't have many absolute favorites and I have it on shuffle so I never learn names of songs or producers. So I don't think that fandom necessarily is the way to put it.
