Hi We are starting an Anime Club at our library. Our first meeting is on the Friday of just before Halloween, I was wondering if anyone could recommend an anime that's appropriate for middle school students that would be fun to watch around Halloween.

Also, which series do you recommend for this age group.

Thanks in advance!

As far as things that are actually appropriate, I'd say the Little Witch Academia movies are both well made and fitting for Halloween. Plus, you don't have to start something you can't finish on your first meeting

Little Witch Academia
Summer Wars
Pretty Cure (It's too long though, so it's not recommended, worth 50 episodes. Each season is a standalone, except for a few.)
Miyazaki (Not Princess Momonoke)

I second Higurashi. 'Another' is also good, but might be a bit dark for middle schoolers. You could always find the version with censored gore.

as for Precure series, Heartcatch is generally considered the "best", though Yes! and Fresh were also enjoyable.
Smile was fun, but the English adaptation changed a few things for the worse.

there's also:
Aikatsu! (idol show)
PR: Aurora Dream (idol show, better appeals than most of Aikatsu. the comedy segments are quite fun)
Shugo Chara (avoid season 3)
Lucky Star (pretty much a classic 4-koma)
Tonari no Totoro
and maybe a few shounen series

I concur that Little Witch Academia would be a good choice. Also Kiki's Delivery Service https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiki%27s_Delivery_Service might be good as well. And Flying Witch could be good as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Witch

Lucky Star may be boring to people who don't get the references (I'm sure middle school students never watched Haruhi...)

I was gonna go Love Live since it was rated E but.....

Given the season I'm going to have to agree with everyone who suggested:

Another http://www.crunchyroll.com/another

Another is pretty gory but it's about a cursed middle school classroom and the themes aren't really anything that middle schoolers wouldn't be able to follow. The primary strength of Another is that it creates a very eerie and suspenseful atmosphere which is great for watching around Halloween.

Some other shows I would recommend are:

Madoka Magica http://www.crunchyroll.com/puella-magi-madoka-magica

I know as a middle schooler there is no way I would give this show a chance because it seems so girly at the start but it's very dark and fitting for Halloween.

Yamada-kun and the 7 Witches http://www.crunchyroll.com/yamada-kun-and-the-seven-witches

Although this show is a comedy and the witches are not the traditional type I still think it fits the season and has humor and interactions that middle schoolers could appreciate.

School-Live might be a good one.

Tho it might be quite dark dunno.
