Plot Summary

Everyone in the world uses smartphone apps. But inside them lurks unknown creatures called "Appli Monsters," or "Appmon." The Appmon are AI lifeforms with the ability to think and act, and exist in the boundary between the human world and digital space. In the vast sea of the internet, the "last boss AI" Leviathan takes control of the Appmon with a virus and begins hacking every system, thus starting to control the human world from the world of the net. Haru Shinkai is led to acquire the Appli Drive, and uses it to materialize Gatchmon, a search app monster.

I think the first episode was alright, not great but not bad either. I had fun watching it with the the themes although the battles so far feels a bit cartoony even for a Digimon show.

So stark700, I can only presume you gave up waiting and decided to watch the episode via less-legitimate means?

As for me I'm still waiting for Crunchyroll to offer a simulcast for Digimon Universe. It's disappointing that even days after the first episode aired there's no sign a simulcast is happening. Still, there are plenty of unannounced spaces left on the line-up page and I only need one of them to be Digimon Universe. Perhaps this time next week the episode discussions can begin under more amiable circumstances but until then it's up to Crunchyroll to sort things out.

Maybe they will announce it eventually, or at least I hope so.

From somewhere (can't remember), I heard it's 50+ episodes.

It's a weird concept, but I'll give it a chance. I thought Xros Wars was stupid at first and dropped it after about 7 or 8 episodes, but then I picked it back up when I heard good things about it and ended up liking it a lot... Not counting that disastrous sequel/final arc.

So far there's a lot of fourth wall breaking in this first episode with all this talk about being a main character and side character.

There's still a chance that Crunchyroll will get the simulcast doe Digimon Universe. I remember when Crunchyroll got the simulcast for Digimon Xros Wars: Young Hunters, that didn't until weeks after the first episode aired in Japan. With that said, given the speed at which Crunchyroll gets each part of Digimon Adventure Tri, I was kind of hoping that they'd have Digimon Universe ready for simulcast before now.

...

Anyway, I just watched the first episode myself - I liked where this new season of Digimon is going. Some of the terminology may have changed but the core of the Digimon franchise remains whole. The Applidrive is basically a new kind of Digivice. While the relationship between Haru and Gatchmon is a classic partnership that would feel right at home in any season of Digimon (except Digimon Frontier...), even if neither them fully realise the significance of their partnership just yet. So yeah, I'm looking forward to watching the next episode.

While I'm not the biggest fan of this series so far, it does keep the core of Digimon, though swinging closer to the more recent games than what came before. The MC spent a little too much time being wimpy, though his reaction to a Digimon just popping up out of nowhere was justified, I thought his meekness dragged on a little too long. Hopefully it will become less of a thing going forward. On the positive side, the art was good, and it looks like there will be some interesting characters coming into play as it goes forward, so for now I'll stick with it.

Episode 2

It was alright for a second episode.

So far from from what I've seen, the show capitalizes on its themes pretty well in particular with Gatchman. I'm still not sold on his style of the show though as the episodes feel like weekly duels.

In regards to the APP digital world, I have to admit that it's creative despite its simple designs. In the meantime, I do like how the app monsters introduced so far seems to have personalities that makes the show quite lively.

Okay then, I've just watched the second episode - I enjoy the premise, it's a really clever take on Digimon. The main antagonist for this episode is Navimon, a Digimon who corrupts GPS apps for his own amusement. It's a telling parable, about the potential dangers of the modern world, with how Navimon is able to lead people into dangerous situations simply because they blindly trust their GPS app. It's played for laughs but the idea is totally plausible, there are so many people today totally dependent on a GPS to get anywhere, corrupting those GPS systems could cause no end of trouble.

Of course, the antagonist Digimon's attacks so far really only amount to trolling; messing with people's messaging services and GPS programs just to make people unhappy. Which is fitting since this show is only just beginning and that the antagonist Digimon seen so far aren't inherently evil but merely being infected by a virus. No doubt that matters will eventually escalate, as this 'Leviathan' makes its presence known. Which makes me wonder... is 'Leviathan' really Leviamon, one of the Seven Great Demon Lords? Only time will tell I suppose.

Edit: Wow... stark700 was still four minutes ahead... must've spent too long writing this post.

At least it was soundly better than the previous episode and I'll keep watching for now.

Obama got lost in Japan.

Thanks Obama Navimon.

Gatchmon + Navimon looks like Shoutmon from Xros Wars. Actually, a lot of this series reminds me of Xros Wars. Combining the digimon to make them stronger, battles taking place in a virtual version of the human world (like in that terrible Xros Wars sequel), etc.

I've got to admit, though. Some of these Appmon designs are pretty clever. They look and function just like the real apps they're based on. It was a little funny how they threw in a quick gag about Cameramon taking a selfie.

Alright, I've seen episode 3, another nice episode that hints at some ongoing plot developments. Firstly, I didn't notice this before but it seems that Digimon Universe might be set in (or around) the year 2040. Which is quite a change from other seasons of Digimon, that are usually set in the same year that the show starts being broadcast. Not Digimon Universe though, I guess they're going slightly more futuristic as way to justify the Appmon as being emergent AI, not that such a fact stopped Digimon Tamers form being set in a contemporary year. Interesting idea though, I'm curious to see where they go with in this slightly futuristic setting.

As for the episode itself, the main antagonist was Roleplaymon, the former inhabitant of a discontinued smartphone game. Suffice to say, I'm not sure if I like or hate Roleplaymon's antics. On one hand I find the idea of erasing a player’s data unforgivable. Yet roleplaymon's efforts to turn Tokyo into a giant augmented reality RPG has me intrigued. Beyond that it seems that Roleplaymon was a special Digimon, one of seven, needed in order to confront Leviathan. So, I guess we'll be hearing more about that plot point further down the road, as the show gears up for an epic battle of some sort.
