I have a problem. I plan on entering in a writing contest but fear is holding me back. How do I suck it up and get over the fear? I can really use the cash to help my mother out. And I also want to use my skills as a writer. I'm just nervous about whether or not I will win. I need to win but my writing isn't great. I can practice but I still worry.

What should I do to stop worrying over nothing? I haven't even started writing yet and I'm super nervous. Got any advice CR users.

Enjoy

Theres not really any risk involved with actually entering, so just try not to worry about it. Thats all you can really do.

Don't worry. You don't know what will happen unless you try. If it's a contest, the worst that can happen is you don't win. In the future, if you're trying to get published, you will most likely be rejected many times before something comes up. It can be a tough process, but if you don't jump in, you'll never grow and learn.

Do it! Good luck!

I mean, yeah, like that other guy said, there's no reason to be afraid since there aren't any consequences if you don't win. I mean, you could enter and lose, and get nothing. Or you could not enter and get nothing. Or you could enter and win, and get the money. I don't think that it is necessarily a bad thing to worry, you just need to try your best and just go for it and hope for the best.

I'm a musician and I used to feel the same way. My stuff used to also suck really bad though, just do it. Criticism will only help you get better if there is any. It's only a win win situation.

I used to write a lot back when I was younger, and I was so unbelievably awful that reading some of my old stuff makes me want to vomit. But I still learned from every failure I made, so it didn't really matter much in the end. I know the money probably compounds your nervousness, but if you don't enter, you don't win. So, take a while to plan things out in your head or on paper, talk to someone about your ideas, then write. Finding other people to read your writing would also be a big help since it can be difficult to catch mistakes in your own work. Good luck! I hope you win.

Harness your emotions in your writing. Right now you're fearful, so use it somehow. Take the emotions that come along with wanting to help out your mother and feeling as if you NEED to win.

Writers can only write about what goes on in their minds and hearts and all of their life experiences and theories, so use whatever life has given you.

It's vague advice, but that's because writing has endless possibilities.

First, write whatever it is you're going to use as your entry. That's important so you've got the bigger part done and ready to go.

Then realise that none of the judges care a damn about anyone entering. If your entry sucks they'll just put in the "lose" pile.
No one is going to judge you personally on the words you put down unless it's a death threat.

If you still can't bring yourself to enter, get someone else to do it for you. Get them to post the manuscript, or give them a memory stick with just that file on it to put in the electronic entry system. If it helps, tell them they can enter you or not so you don't actually know.

Oh, and if you do enter. Let us know the result if you get told. It'd be nice to know what happened when someone listened to a forum poster in the internet.
