Not really about addictions but I read an article about how some kid saved himself and his sister from a bear because of some moves he learned about from World of Warcraft. xD

Slightly off topic: Oddly enough, with so many people saying gaming addiction, it's not actually classed as one, being as it has the wrong type of 'fix' as it were. But since there's no real term yet, we're all happy enough to use addiction ^^

On topic:

Gaming addiction can be a pretty touchy topic with lots of people, as everyone (laymen and psychologists both) seem to have their own definition and symptoms of the beast.

Generally though, addiction would be when, while you may not play for an excessive amount of time, you need to play it, or a related field (reading on it, planning on it etc) for a set minimum per day. Failure to do so would have typical withdrawal symptoms (irritation, aggression and such)

How much it takes to be addicted will vary widely between people however. I had one house-mate who had to play WoW for a minimum of 12hrs a day, because of which he lost his job, girlfriend and got booted from university. In the same year, a friend played WoW for about 20hrs a day over a period of three months (holidays), at the end of which, he simply stopped playing when classes resumed, no big deal to him.

All said though, it's getting to be more and more of a problem, as bigger and better games hit the shelves. Who really wants to be 'Bob, Assistant Manager, Burger King', when they could be 'Cowboy_Jimmy, Level 245 Warlock, Guild Master of Rancho Magnifico'?

I think it's the same reason people get addicted to gambling or sex. The feeling of euphoria, brain chemical stuff, etc. I hate it when people blame it entirely on the video games. These addicts probably would have found some other addiction.

Play me and I'll make you stop

Secondly this might be old news but anyone heard of games that respond to brain waves instead of controllers. I read about that and it sounds badass >.>

Third, I think gaming is fine as long as it doesn't interfere with your real life and you do other things besides just playing a video game.

Kids who kill people over video games aren't hardcore gamers they are stupid dumbass pricks who give gamers a bad name and give people like Hilary Clinton the right to say violence is based on video games that people play.

The WoW raid was pretty funny IMO even though the guy actually did die =\

Also anyone with a clan named Ku Klux Clan deserves to fucking die.

Lols....you want to challenge me Ive been playing it for 8 years.....I want to stop but cant T_T huuhuhuhh

Oh, hoh, hoh, I could go on real deep into this topic for hours.

Basically, in a really compact nutshell... I'd say it's because it's an escape to a new and awesome world. I mean, take your favorite anime, game, book, anything.... and picture you in it. That's what a game is, the world is there in front of you, BUT you can i n t e r a c t with it, as if you were living it.

That and is fun to slay evil or.... two words, BOOM HEADSHOT! XD

That's just me, of course.
