Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On

This is a world where both men and monsters exist. Those who hunt the monsters are called Hunters. But in a small corner of the Hunter's world, there are those called Riders who bond with and coexist with monsters. With their Kizuna Ishi (Bonding Stones) that allow them to awaken the hidden power inside monsters, Riders live in secrecy together with their Otomon, the monsters they formed a connection with.
Ryuto, a young boy living in the Rider village of Hakum, dreams of becoming the world's best Rider. Having just turned 12, he sets out to find his own Otomon for himself before the ceremony where he is given his own Kizuna Ishi. Together with his kind-hearted childhood friend Cheval, his inquisitive childhood friend Lilia, and his partner Naville, he sets out deep into the forest, and has a miraculous encounter with a Rathalos.

Episode 1

Lute is just the prototypical hot-blooded MC in a kids show as he goes delinquent finding an egg all by himself not realizing the dangers he faces. And by taking that beehive that the bear monster comes chasing after them. But seeing that the egg hatched without a kinship stone is a big deal that at least makes up for all the trouble they caused. Well, that was a decent enough way to start even if it is that kind of show meant to market a game more than anything.

Episode 1 was decent enough for what it was, and it's clearly supposed to be aimed at a pretty young audience so it's not really fair to judge it based on the same sort of merits I would tend to judge other shows on. It certainly doesn't stray too far, if at all, from the established formula for this sort of show.

That said, I do still have to call out the monsters. They just don't look good. Or, more specifically, they themselves look okay but look completely cut and pasted into the anime instead of actually being part of it. It's almost like no effort at all was taken to blend the CGI and animation together here.

Hmmm I thought we'd see Funi's intro at beginning.

The sub doesn't use the localized English names for the monsters.

Yeah two episodes in and I'm done. I figured I'd give it a shot since I'm not too familiar with the whole Monster Hunter thing but this clearly just isn't for me. That said, this second episode was better than the first (with the exception of Navirou who just continually got even more annoying every second he was on screen).

I might drop this soon.

If this was just 12 episodes, I would be fine but 48...every week on Saturday? (there's enough shows this season on the weekends as it is). The monster designs doesn't impress me either and story feels pretty blend at the moment.

I will admit the show seems to have a pretty narrow strike zone, though it was nice to see that the various 'riders' got monsters that matched their personalities.

Lute -- Rathalos
Cheval -- Velocidrome
Afro -- useless monster
Slick Older Brother -- Yian Kut-Ku, the clown pokemon.
Hyoro -- Bulldrome

It was nice to see the Hunter, too.

More people introduced, not a whole lot happening though. They did, weirdly, use the translated name in subtitles for Iodrome and Ioprey, while still calling Bulldrome Dos Fango.

This show might improve once they actually start combatting. Maybe then it can explore why Riders think that they're morally superior to Hunters.

This show is going to have 48 episodes? Wow, that'll last a while.

I'm most curious about the truth behind the fleeing beasts and new monster designs. Though the kids do bother me a bit. They've been in multiple life or death situations, but they (and the adults) brush it off like its nothing. I wish they had a higher sense of danger.

A big race, a bit of a battle. Congala (Babakong) introduces our intrepid heroes, and the insufferable Hyoro, to one of the more insidious status effects: Stench.

Leaus, the Rathalos, King of the Skies, continues to be a drama queen.
