If you can call that a genre, the recent deluge of Battle Harems (i.e. Infinite Stratos, Mahouka, Rakudai, etc) is probably my least favorite type of anime. They all seem very alike, aggressively aimed at an audience I am both too old and too female to be part of, and tend have a bright, generic visual style I just really don't care for. And unlike other genres that have a lot of so-so entries, I can't name a battle harem that stands out as something special, at least not enough to be noticed by general anime fans.

I used to dismiss Slice of Life shows, but after watching some quality entires that are less moe-heavy (Barakamon, Flying Witch, Polar Bear Café) I've started to appreciate the genre more. It probably also helped that moe/slice of life stopped being 50% of a given anime season once the trend cooled down. Same thing with Battle Shonen - I could never stomach the pace and length of Naruto, Bleach or One Piece, so I thought the genre just wan't for me, but after watching My Hero Academia and Soul Eater (and reading One Piece as a manga) I'm starting to realize why the genre is so popular.

thanks! I agree 1000%. Characters either have no intelligence or no self-respect in those shows.

Harem/reverse harem. A lot of them are just so formulaic, and the entire concept just feels artificial and fake to me.

Mecha anime. Normally I'm big on technology and Gunbuster is one of my favourite anime BUT most mecha anime follow the same script: protag, who knows nothing about piloting a mecha, suddenly finds himself (and it's almost always a him) in a situation with an uber mecha that he not only can amazingly pilot but he's the ONLY one who CAN pilot it. That part alone makes my eyes roll right out of my skull it gets used so often.

I wouldn't have said this a few years ago, but Fantasy-Drama.

Fantasy-Drama has become the staple of making something rehashed appear good. Like during the time of Orphen and Slayers I enjoyed it a lot since there was a lot of adventure involved. Even Berserk the Golden Age Arc was quite a bit of that. These days though, it has become pretty much torture porn. A contest to see how brutally you can kill off characters. I think Attack on Titan started it personally. Attack on Titan was half and half adventure and brutal torture deaths. Then Akame Ga Kill came along and cranked up the amount of brutal torture. Since that also did rather well, others began to follow suit.

I know this is kind of a broad genre, but I cannot for the life of me, get into Moe stuff. New Game! was alright, but even by episode 7-8 I just dropped it. I still have to try some of the more popular stuff (K-On!, Non Non Biyori, etc.) But so far, Moe is not for me in any way. It certainly doesn't help that they all have this "cute," high-pitched voices. It is mostly just annoying. Heck, if someone has a really good Moe anime to watch, I'll give it a shot.

Have you tried High School Fleet? It's basically a moe version of the Hunt for Red October.

Normal harems.

I can still like them, but it's a real up-hill battle.

I'm not a huge fan of romance to begin with, and rather than adding anything to them, I find that harems bizarrely take away from them.I can't be bothered to care for more characters than a typical love triangle.

Strangely, I don't feel that way about reverse harems though. Perhaps because the romantic dynamic is so different? I have difficulty even seeing something like Fruits Basket or B-Project as a harem due to how the romance works

I like mech shows, but I can't stand that trope. I tend to not watch the ones that do that, with the exception of shows with sentient mechs (Zoids, Voltron) that can make up for an inexperienced pilot or when it's used for comedy (Megas XLR).
The fact that they have trained pilots is part of the appeal of Gundam Wing and Gundam IBO.

Least favorite, slice of life that gets a little too deep. It's like shit, I was looking for some humour and to relate a little not dig up some long forgotten trauma

I have literally had to turn some stuff off.

Things that actually are about ordinary high school students.

Edit: ^^^ What he said. I don't get why people find that interesting.

I don't like slow realistic romance/drama shows in general. But I can't really say I dislike any genre, because it always depends on the show itself if I like it or not.
