Thanks for starting a new discussion thread!

This one is a bit early though -- the show doesn't air until about an hour and half from now. Since this is your first one, I'll leave it be, but just keep that in mind for the future. -- the threads shouldn't be started before they air in Japan (I use livechart.me to get a good idea of what starts when -- you can even change your preferences to show your local time zone).

I know nothing about this show -- but I always give first episodes a chance, so I'll be back a little later to say what I thought.

Sorry Lorreen, I didn't know there was a time rule and I certainly didn't want to be unfair. I'll read the rules next time.

Episode 1

This show doesn't waste any time getting into the thick of things as Hanasaki shows off his badass self there. All that detective stuff is pretty intense and intriguing there to say the least. Just like how Rampo Kitan began, the one called Kobayashi is recruited seeing that being a detective is his only readon for living. This show certainly has potential, so lets see how things build off this. I really enjoy all the high tech stuff going on.

Feeling half-n-half on this one. It could be OK, but the only character who is mildly interesting is the blond immortal kid. Everyone else is a raging douche-bag. And they're trying to hard to be so edgy that it's just annoying.

I'm a bit confused. Is this show somehow connected to the Rampo Kitan show from last year? We've got a detective named Kogoro Akechi who chases after a man named 20 faces. Is this all just coincidence or did they just take another Edogawa Ranpo book and reframe the narrative into the future?

Oh also, the immortal kid's name is Kobayashi which is the name of the main character from that other anime.

I feel like they either are just paying Homage or they took a ton of inspiration from some of his detective novels. The Boy Detectives Club series is one of Mr Edogawa Ranpo's most famous series of books and it features Kogoro Akechi chasing a man named 20 faces.

Ah, I dropped that show after a couple of episodes. I pretty much hated it from the beginning. I'll be interested in hearing from others how they are connected and how this show stacks up in terms of story and tone to that one, in their opinion.

Oh, I don't think the shows themselves are connected. The original Author of that show was a man who wrote books back in the 1920s. Also they were made by different studios. I just kept getting some weird deja vu while watching the first episode of this show when they kept talking about the names of all of the characters.

oh jeeze i'm an idiot. The actual Japanese name is Trickster: Edogawa Ranpo "Shounen Tanteidan" Yori which means the show is entirely based off of his Shounen Tanteidan (aka Boy Detectives Club series) novels.

As far as I can tell, there's not going to be a whole lot of overlap between this and Rampo Kitan. Rampo Kitan was based mostly on short stories and the first novel in the Boy Detective's series while this is going to reference more the the Boy Detective's series (there's 26 books in this). They are already vastly different in tone with Rampo Kitan being aimed at a more mature audience with loads of wierd fanservice. This seems to be more in line with a typical shonen. There's already a lot of differences in their characterizations.

I think this episode relied a lot on the cultural knowledge of Akechi and the Fiend with Twenty Faces. This was kind of like putting Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty in a showdown with no explanation and no buildup. Hopefully it'll get better at pacing.

I found Kobayashi rather annoying. It was Hanazaki that kept me interested despite the lack of flow in this episode. But the I fully admit to being in Bungo Stray Dogs deprivation (come on, wednesday...) and his flippant attitude reminded me of several of the characters there.
