Episode 12

Musashi explains his story here as he's been through a lot of hell himself. And then after Rock and Nico got their rewards, Uno is now enjoying his as he's got a game room full of bar club games. Pretty fun time to be had for everybody. No wonder Musashi was literally burning up as his body temperature was unusually high since his birth. It will be interesting to see how the first half closes out.

Episode 13

And so, the first half ends with Elf tortuing Jyugo reminding him that prison is no escape from his past and that drove him to wanting to escape for real not wanting to get his cellmates involved. Bt just when it looked like he was about to badly slice up Hajime, his cellmates intervene and let him know that they are facing this problem together and to continue having fun. Just when I couldn't think that this show would get this serious, it just did. German bastard #11 needs to die as he sure did a number on Jyugo and Musashi. So with that, it's onto the next season as it shifts to an ONA series.

Pretty meh show overall.

I wasn't sold by the humor or the characters. Hajime was probably my favorite character in this show but even he didn't interest me enough. Finale was pretty generic with the whole escape thing.

And that's wrap of part 1. Eh it's okay, I do feel like the comedy isn't for everyone and also the sparkles/character design can be a real distraction to some. I will give credit that the series did go in a direction I wasn't expecting. Looking forward to the second half next year.

This show is really enjoyable when it remembers it's a comedy. The serious arc that derails most of the season was poorly executed up until episodes 12 and 13, and then ended so sloppily it pissed me off. I really wish this show had stuck with comedy.

I loved this show. I loved the main characters. And I loved the Warden... mmmm mmm the Warden.

But, it should have stuck with more of the comedy. It had me rolling when it was good.

I do hope they make another season though.

Just wrapped up watching episode 9-13.

I didn't have any expectations going in and haven't read the manga, but I enjoyed it overall. I wouldn't give it more than 7-8/10 and am looking forward to the second season that is right around the corner.

It doesn't seem to be a popular opinion, but I liked the mixing of serious and comedic episodes.

This is pretty much my overall opinion as well. I think they did fine with the mixing of serious and comedic. It's not exactly an uncommon thing, and I don't always like it, but in this case I think it was done well--though it did catch me by surprise!

(I just finished watching Is this a Zombie? which was mostly hilarious, then toward the end it got kind of serious and also boring (because the charm of the whole thing was the silliness (mixed with just a little heartwarmingness). Fortunately it almost redeemed itself with the final two episodes that got us back to a high percentage of hilarity.)

Episode 14

And the second half begins with this show going back to a full-blown comedy here and the narrator pointing out time and again that Nanbaka is a comedy. This episode is pretty much a bunch of random skits with keeping this show a comedy in mind. There's the Roomba that Seitaro ordered called Nanba, the cat Kuu who has been Hajime's comrade all this time while working at Nanba, and then the hair color switching craziness that sent the whole prison into a frenzy, but because Hajime is bald that he wasn't affected. A good, entertaining way to keep this show going.

Not a bad start, but it's just going to feel like one big season running back to back.

Next episode seems like it's going to run with the comedy more, but we all know the serious plot about the experiments is going to resurface at some point.
