I have a confession to make. I have seen only a few episodes of Natsume Yujin-Cho from past seasons. I enjoyed what I saw, but for some reason the seasons just sat in my queue unwatched for the most part. I think I shall do better with a new episode each week, and now I have more incentive to catch up with prior seasons.

This first episode of a new season was lovely. A truly effective mix of calm and tension and small mysteries and friendships. What more can I say? Not much right now.

I'm so excited to see this series animated again. Watching this new episode makes me want to rewatch the previous seasons.

One question: do I need to watch the previous season to have a good understanding of what's going on? I could follow this episode just fine at least.

I don't think so. Just watch the preview at the end of every episode and if you see a character you haven't seen yet go to the natsume-wiki site. Usually all you have to know is if this person is a friend or not and how they met (if it's even necessary).

most of the episodes are just single adventures he's had so it doesn't really matter if you don't watch all of them or watch them out of order, but every episode is worth watching nonetheless

You could just jump straight into season 5, but I wouldn't do so personally.

The previous seasons explain about the yokai and about Natsume Reiko (which, believe me, this person will get mentioned quite a lot lol) Plus you'll miss out on character interaction and the relationship between Natsume and the people around him (not to mention Natsume's past which is a pretty important factor in my opinion).

Then again, you can always go back and watch the previous seasons when season 5 is finished. It's your choice.
