Thanks for the advices.

I think I'll watch one or two more episodes and decide if I want to put it on hold and watch the previous seasons at some point or finish the current one first.

One question: do I need to watch the previous season to have a good understanding of what's going on? I could follow this episode just fine at least.

You could just jump straight into season 5, but I wouldn't do so personally.

The previous seasons explain about the yokai and about Natsume Reiko (which, believe me, this person will get mentioned quite a lot lol) Plus you'll miss out on character interaction and the relationship between Natsume and the people around him (not to mention Natsume's past which is a pretty important factor in my opinion).

Then again, you can always go back and watch the previous seasons when season 5 is finished. It's your choice.

I totally agree that it is worth watching from the beginning, in order, so that you can see the character development for Natsume, Nyanko Sensei, and other key characters. That's one of the things that makes this series so special.

Given that there are 52 episodes across seasons 1-4 and it'll take time to watch them all, I can totally understand watching season 5 along with the rest of us and catching up on the other seasons whenever you can. I'd do the same.

Even though they aren't really recurring characters, the youkai in this series are so charming with personality.

We got cute youkai girl this episode and her towel.

This will always be my most favourite anime ever, even more so than Mushishi.

OMG ep 2 was so sweet and sad... and the little girl youkai was so adorable.

Man, episode 5 really got to me. It's episodes like these that deal with a youkai's inability to communicate with humans that tend to stick with me. Same as with the 2nd episode. Perhaps because it's very similar to unrequited love (or unrequited friendship) which is a concept that has always strongly resonated with me.

I love shows that do this. Like for example have a ghost character that hangs around because they care for someone they left behind. But if not done well, it can be kind of corny. This show almost always seems to pull it off perfectly though, and it's really beautiful when it does.

There's a word, Sehnsucht, which I feel captures the essence of this show at it's best. There's no direct translation but "nostalgia" is close, tho it's more cutting, a bittersweet yearning for an ideal that doesn't exist.
