Do you mean the scene at her house, or the whole episode? I don't think it's supposed to be taken as serious as a lot of people make it out to be.

People take the weight loss bit seriously? It's just a short-cut plot device rather than expend time on her dieting and exercising.

I really enjoyed this first episode. Does it mention how she lost all the weight, btw?

She basically starved herself to hotness. She was so depressed by Shion's death that she stopped eating for a whole week.

Mainly the fact that she starved herself skinny. Given how goofy the story is in general I get that it's just a stupid plot device. Still cringeworthy how close it comes to real life eating disorders.

There is no way she could have lost so much weight in one week and end up the way she looks atm. Not to mention that much weight loss on that time frame could of be fatal.

^This

As soon as we all take that preposterous fact out of the scene (that is obviously a bad set joke) and enjoy the fact that she is an fujoshi otaku and there are boys who want her and she only wants to pair them up. The show is light and hilarious as any other rom-com.

Re-watching the first episode I'd totally forgotten Yuu Kobayahi had been cast in Kae's role. I mean, there were elements of the voice I recognized but then other times it'd remind me of HanaKana. I know some folks got upset that HanaKana didn't reprise her role from the CD but come on, it's Yuu! If there was any seiyuu I'd want to see pick-up the role from HanaKana it's her.

I really enjoyed reading the manga and the adaptation has exceeded my expectation ... however I dont like the voice change

but the theory behind it is when you are overwheight , you have more hormone that can deepen ones voice. In women, the slightly higher level of testosterone results in a masculinization of the voice. Specifically, the pitch gets slightly lower.and teenagers do make a lot of hormones

This episodes really cracked me up a lot becuase I keep thinking of the Fudanshi anime last season

BTW Yuu voice is awesome , she actually sound like HanaKana.

Ooooh didn't notice.

Tehehe~~♪ テヘヘッ(*゚ー゚)>

Did her myopia got magically fixed when she lost weight? (゚ー゚?)(。_。?)(゚-゚?)(。_。?)

Sounds a little suspicious that she got contact lenses at hand. """"""Normally"""""" (<- notice the quotes, lol) when you don't take care about your weight you don't care much about how you look so we tend to be more practical and don't look into appearance fixes such as contact lenses. (Yes, I was a little overweight and with normal glasses, hahaha. But now I'm on my ideal healthy weight [6' and 158 pounds] and, yup, I LASIK'ed my eyes to a 20/20 vision, so I know what I am talking about :p ; of course, my case is not a law or anything)

Episode 2

Kae gets suckered into playing soccer to fill in for an injured member, and while she's fairly athletic, she only knows the beautiful game through anime and is not in any shape to play. All she could do is kick it backwards, and she uses that to her advantage in the match. And just when summer vacation is just around the corner, Kae's grades have tanked and taking makeup classes means missing Comiket and all those other things. So she has to study hard, but seeing that the boys can't behave themselves that they end up studying at Kae's house, and her brother makes a mess of things. In the end she passes. That was pretty hilarious seeing Kae playing soccer and those boys getting a good look at how big a Shion fan Kae is.

Get rekt, onii-chan!

Everything was on point this episode as well. Next episode should be fun and there will be references to other series (AoT for example).

Well, this episode tanked pretty hard for me. I suppose it had it's moments and all, but it also went pretty far against what I was thinking the series was going to be. There was pretty much nothing about her imagining the guys together or trying to push them in that direction and instead it was all fairly bog standard reverse harem with an "Oh wait, but she's an otaku!" coating on top.

I don't think an anime is obliged to be aware of and compensate for all the issues it may or may not bring up (fat shaming, eating disorders, etc.). So I'm not really sympathetic to calling this show "gross" or "cringeworthy": it's true that humans find overweight people less attractive, so that people are not nice to her in the first episode is realistic. You could say that the anime is at fault for then presenting such without combatting it, but not everything must be subject to making the world a better place in every way.

I like how we actually get to see the transition between her crazy face and normal face. I feel like anime with crazy faces don't usually show that.

I too was hoping for more of the primary conflict of the series, but alas, episode 2 didn't give us that. It would have been much better if it had. All the same, it did lean into Kae's otakuness, I did feel like the soccer bit in the first half was needless, though.

I think that ppl are taking the miraculous weight loss a little too seriously, they are entitled to it, tho. But distracts them from the main purpose of the story, imho.
