Halfway through third episode I lost interest in this. This thing has exactly one joke and they played it out in the first episode.

Episode 4

The kids are now talking pop, and while others have actually read that stuff, Miss Bernard only said so through her three step process. That's not reading, and as such heads are popping. That was some hilarious talk about what pop is all about that ends with Miss Bernard's thought of being a prisoner.

Here are steps 1 and 2 of Miss Bernard's book selection and reading process:

Episode 5

It's onto mystery novels as Miss Bernard actually attempts to read a book in Proust's In Search of Lost Time. But her attention span can't handle 5000 pages worth of writing, so once again she talks books without reading anything.

And to Dogra Magra, this is how Miss Bernard thinks of that book:

We found out that her reading level is joke books and those touching stories in convenience stores with the cute animal pictures and inspiring quotes.

Episode 6

This time, Sawako is talking at a cafe instead of the library with Shiori. She sure does play around with numbers seeing that she has read zero as far as the sci-fi top list goes. Shiori only got to around 70% while Sawako says she read 40%, though she really read none of it. That was an amusing talk there as those two are there to seek shelter from the rain.

Sawako says she's reading, but her actions say otherwise. Books and Sawako just don't have a good relation.

Another episode of Kanbayashi babysitting, this time in a café in the rain. An examination of the disingenuous possibilities of 'I haven't even read half!' and similar phrases. Kanbaby continues to soften toward her headstrong charge.

Episode 7

Now the talk is about used books, and Shiori sure has a valid perspective on them seeing that they did end up in the bargain bin after all. But of course, Shiori is someone who would want to read stuff first before deciding if it is worth the 1000 or 100 yen price tag. Sawako, on the other hand, just wants to feel out its aura to decide that. Pretty funny to see them talking about this kind of stuff.

And the killer is... they'll have to figure that out for themselves.

Episode 8

And now, Sawako is reading a mathematical book about Fermat's theorem. But unlike with the other books, there's no such thing as a spoiler as it has been proven. Sawako and Endou are at the cafe, and Shiori happens to be working as a waitress there. She's pushed over the edge with Sawako's talk that she flips the table and makes a mess of things. That was pretty funny to see Shiori losing it.

That's hot what that string in the book is for, Sawako.

Episode 9

The talk here is about black books and the freezing weather as books with black covers give some sort of ominous vibe according to Sawako. So while Sawako and Shiori are waiting for the bus, it's freezing and Shiori's fingers go numb to the point where she can't turn the pages. But in comes Sawako's warm hands as she brought hand warmers. Talk about coming in the clutch.

Shiori gives her own interpretation as to what this cover means.

Wow, I'm impressed. If I wasn't convinced before that the creators of this series are sophisticated fans of SF and literature in general (or at least are going out of their way to fake it), I certainly am now. The book Shiori is reading in Episode 9 is _Ice_ by Anna Kavan (see the cover at 1:23), a work so obscure that most SF fans are unlikely to have even heard of it, much less read it. (I read it long ago, based on a recommendation in Brian Aldiss's "Billion Year Spree".)

It's certainly believable that Shiori has read 70% of books on the "top-ranked SF" list, although _Ice_ is not really SF per se--it's more an avant-garde work that uses SF elements, and is reminiscent of J.G. Ballard in that respect. (And if I recall correctly they name-checked Ballard's _High Rise_ in a previous episode.) A final thought: The Japanese edition of _Ice_ has a much more elegant cover than the English edition; I can understand why they picked this one to represent Shiori's obsession with books with black covers.

Episode 10

Sawako is taking the day off from school as she's sick, but even so that doesn't stop her from hitting the books her way. Heck, she even brags about it to Shiori. But nevertheless, the library is just quiet like it's supposed to be, but her friends would rather see her there in the library. And then they go looking at a fashion magazine the next day. I knew that Sawako would make something out of the situation.

And she does that through the phone as Shiori can't help but to feel annoyed.
