Synopsis

Shimazu Toyohisa, while involved in the Battle of Sekigahara, manages to mortally wound Ii Naomasa, but is critically wounded in the process. As he walks from the field wounded and bleeding, Toyohisa finds himself transported to a corridor of doors where a bespectacled man at a desk waits for him. This man, Murasaki, sends Toyohisa into the nearest door where he wakes up in another world. There, Toyohisa meets other great warriors like him who have been transported as well, to be part of a group known as Drifters.
This world contains both native humans and a number of fantastical races, including elves, dwarves, and hobbits. However, the world is at war, with the humans waging a losing war against another group of great warriors, the Ends, who wish to take over the world and kill all the Drifters. Under the Ends' command are many terrible creatures, including dragons, which they use to destroy everything in their wake. At the start of the series, the Ends' army has control of the northern part of the continent and is currently trying to invade the south through a pivotal fortress at the northernmost tip of a nation called Carneades. Meanwhile, the Octobrist Organization, a group of human magicians native to this world, attempt to bring together the many individual Drifters to save their world from the brutal Ends.

And let the bloodbath begin. Right off the bat, this show is letting you know that this is from the same guy who did Hellsing.

Episode 1

And the battle begins with Toyohisa slicing up everybody who comes his way before taking on Naomasa. Not even getting skewered was going to stop him from taking down Naomasa. But what awaits in the afterlife is a world full of elves, a meeting with the Lord Nobunaga, and the archer Yoichi. Their meeting was pretty lighthearted given the situation everybody is in. It's Hellsing Ultimate just the way I remember it, except without as much bloodshed (at least so far and I'm expecting less compared to HU as that was an OVA, while it can't be quite as bloody for a TV series). Anyway, that's a great beginning.

Gonzo did the first series. For the OVA Satellite did 1-4, Madhouse did 5-7, and two other studios together did 8-10.

I'll give it a couple more episodes, but that first one was just a mess.

From the headache inducing opening scenes that bounced up and down, to the off-the-wall humor scenes that just did not fit the rest of the show, looks like this show can't make up it's mind on what it's going to be.

I might like it if they stop the wacky comedy stuff. Be a serious action/adventure or be a screwball comedy. Just stop mixing those two up, please.

Guess we'll see.

That's sort of the mangaka's style.
I haven't read Drifters, but I've read Hellsing. Hellsing would have extremely serious and gory scenes, then you'd have one of those goofy humor scenes.

You can definitely smell the Hellsing's creator all over this: detailed animation and facial expressions as well as gratuitious ultraviolence. Not that the latter is bad in a show like this.

While the intrigue is strong, I think I'll only be fully sold on this anime when more characters are introduced.

Nerd fact:

Oda and Mori's lord-vassal relationship was thought to have followed the nanshoku tradition - an intimate relationship - and was widely admired in Japan for its strength. In nanshoku literature of the Edo period, it was widely understood that Oda and Mori had a sexual relationship that was commonly found in those times.

The Japanese term nanshoku (「男色」 which can also be read as danshoku) is the Japanese reading of the same characters in Chinese, which literally mean "male colors." The character 色 (color) has the meaning of sexual pleasure in China and Japan. This term was widely used to refer to some kind of male–male sex in a pre-modern era of Japan. The term shudō (「衆道」, abbreviated from wakashudō, the "way of adolescent boys") is also used, especially in older works. The Japanese nanshoku tradition drew heavily on that of China
