Not wanting to jump into this involved discussion, but I am just curious about this comment. Obviously you have a very strong feeling on this and I'm curious as to which of this seasons shows you find to fit the above description.

Don't sit on the fence; if you have a problem with the premise of this thread (as you clearly do) then by all means take part in the discussion. Suffice to say, the problem with fan service today goes beyond this season alone. As has already been expressed both in this thread and many before it, the alarming frequency of these low budget fan service shows has been a factor for many years now. Yet not so long ago this fan service garbage was relegated to the fringes of anime, those dark corners web never meant to see the light of day. However, in a perverse twist of fate these same fan service shows are now being used to represent anime as whole on the international stage, an example of puerile degeneracy that is undermining anime's hard won reputation as a respected creative medium.

My question was more geared to the fact that I've watched quite a few shows this season and I can think of very few that I would call out as having an excessive amount of fan service yet you were calling out this season in particular for having a hideous amount. I was just trying to see where you were coming from as I agree with you in general that anime could use less fan service (or at least less reliance on it as being a consistent element of the medium). I don't, however, see it being realistic for fan service to just go away or for things to go back to the way that they were. The industry as a whole is much different now and without the crutch/element of fan service I don't think it would survive. That may mean everything but the "best" would disappear and we would be left without all of the chaff, or it could lead to no anime being produced at all and a significant negative impact on the Japanese economy as a whole, or it could lead to a mix of both. I don't see taking a pragmatic approach and seeing the question of fan service as more than a black and white issue as sitting on the fence but if you see it that way then you're welcome to. As in the interaction we've had in the past, it's clear that you're not actually interested in discussing things anyway.

You make the mistake of trying to call this current state of affairs normal, that there's something inevitable about the idea that the whole anime industry should sink into a mire of infantile hedonism. In truth the current bloated mass of fan service shows is nothing more than an anomaly, an unwelcome intrusion which is altering the course of anime as whole, running the industry into the ground with low budget shows that prevent anything else from gaining enough attention to survive. However, that's not to say it's impossible to turn things around; with time and dedicate its indeed possible for anime to redeem itself and once again big to make many high budget and ambitious shows. However, before that day can arrive we must all acknowledge the damage that these fan service shows are doing to anime, that if left unchecked this race to the bottom will leave no industry left to save.

Well, it's a matter of opinion as not every season can be strong. Of course, while it's hard to tell after just one or two episodes. That said, there are not many shows that have a chance to be S-rank, but there are plenty of A-rank and B-rank shows, and generally that's the criteria I use to determine how strong a season is.

I'm honestly not feeling this season myself. I'm still wading through what's new this season, but after spending much of Saturday and yesterday watching new anime, I've only addedfour full-form shows to my watch schedule (and three or four short-forms), as opposed to the summer season when I had like 20 things up in the air from the word go.

Out of what I've watched SO FAR this season, I'm only sticking with Izetta, Drifters, ClassicaLoid, and Keijo (and I'm not sure how long I'll be sticking with Keijo). I still have a number of new titles to look at, but the crap to cream ratio is pretty staggering this time around.

Every season is worse than the last, apparently.

I haven't watched much yet, since I'm currently burned out on anime, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the season isn't as weak as you think it is. Either that, or you're just really unlucky that none of the shows put out this season appeal to your taste.

Do you have numbers to back this up? Maybe some graphs?
Because you just saying anime is going to hedonistic hell without anything backing you up isn't very convincing. Especially when I find worthwhile shows every season that don't rely on fanservice.

Not every anime can be the equivalent of a Michelin 3 star restaurant. You're always going to have fast food and dive bar type restaurants. Not every anime can be high budget and avant garde.

What is up with people this season? There's always been cries of things sucking every season but it's like this fall has bought up the WORST in everyone...It's not just here either. It's a lot fo anime sites.

Are people that pissed off that Yuri on Ice and Hanamaru are around? Y'all got Keijou.

It's quite unfortunate that you don't agree with all the concerns that have been raised in recent weeks about the direction of the anime industry. Honestly, I think it's refreshing to see people openly talking about what's wrong with much anime today and the measures that should be taken to correct the situation, lest the entire anime industry collapse under the weight of all these wretched fan service shows. The sheer number of hideous fan service shows being promoted this season has proven to be a catalyst for a lot of people, that the presence of such low quality anime is a problem that can't be ignored any longer. The anime industry needs to put a stop to these fan service shows and start making high budget and ambitious anime again, otherwise anime fans will just continue to abandon the industry in droves.

I try and tell that somethings are NOT fanservice and you still seriously believe that anime is dead. Even though there are reports that it does quite fine in sales.

All of this amounts to is 'NOTHING I LIKE IS BEING MADE ANYMORE AND THEREFORE ALL ANIME IS TRASH AND THE WORST."

DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT THEN. THis is why Western fans are so goddamn spoiled. F'yall.

Every season it seems to be the worst season ever of anime to some people. Everyone has different tastes and this season seems to be more shoujo and sports related anime, nothing wrong with that.

I like having my simulcasts spread out throughout the week personally.

This season, we're seriously overcharged on saturday and then it's practically dead from sunday to tuesday.

Yeah this season is not for me either. It's too bad for me because the summer didn't have much either. Re;zero was the only one I looked forward too. Now it's over and I need something to attempt to take over that role this season. Drifters and Izetta are the only ones that look interesting to me, still trying to see if there will be a hidden gem in the rest of the shows.
