Synopsis

Rei Kiriyama is a 17-year-old boy who recently started living alone, financed by his salary as a professional Shogi player. Despite his independence, however, he's yet to mature emotionally, and his problems continue to haunt him in his daily life. His relationship with his adoptive family is strained, and he has difficulties interacting with his fellow high school students. Meanwhile, his professional career has entered a slump. Burdened with the heavy expectations placed on him as the fifth to become pro in middle school, his wins and losses are fluctuating as his record and progression into the ranks begin to stagnate.

Acquainted with Rei are the three Kawamoto sisters: Akari, Hinata, and Momo. Unlike Rei, they live happily in their modest home, which they warmly welcome Rei into as if he were one of their own. Despite his reservations about becoming too close to the family, he frequently visits, interacting with them and receiving the kind of care and affection he never quite had while under his foster home.

This is the story of Rei's triumphs and failures, relationships new and old, and his growth as a person.

Episode 1

Shaft's signature animation style is in full force again all to bring the bizarre into the game of shogi. Not a lot of talking going on as the visuals are what do all the talking in the first chapter. Anyway, Rei is building quite a dynamic relationship with the three sisters, Rei's path to becoming the best in Shogi is going to be a rough one. Next time, Rei has a match against a fellow high schooler. That was an interesting way to start this, and certainly you just can't help but to think about how Shaft is putting its bizarre style to use in this.

Episode 1

I knew I was going to love this series and the first episode pulled me in within the first 10 seconds.

Akiyuki Shinbo is one of my favorite anime directors, so seeing his work this season was highly anticipated for me. You can already see his work in the first few shots of the episode, which conveys subtle things that enhance the story.

I'm looking forward to more and I would like to write about this series as it continues airing!

Gotta love that Shaft animation. With the plentiful of shows that CR acquired this season it's nice to have good ol' slice of life like this.

Oh man the MC is all Your Lie in April and all those around him are so feels good and heartwarming like Barakamon. I forget this was a Shaft anime but while i was watching i was impressed by a lot of the backgrounds and art in general. They don't waste anytime in the symbolism seeing Rei's current color scheme is all grey and dull but everything and everyone else around him are full of warm colors and full facial expressions. Looking forward to more!

Even tho this seems more visuals and feels focused and not so much cunning dialogue. Give me that sexy head tilt and zooming in on eyes at least once pls k thx

The PV didn't remind me much of Shaft but the actual show sure does! I really enjoyed that first episode, great start to what I can already tell is going to be a great show.

To me it reminds me of https://myanimelist.net/character/47299/Kaito_Kirishima from Ano natsu de matteiru.

Ep1

Wasn't sure if I was going to like it, since I'm not a fan of shogi, but so far I'm enjoying it.
It balances well it's dark and light hearted moments and the animation <3. Looking forward to next week.

Oh that was just amazing, this is the kind of SHAFT presentation I can fall head over heels in love with. This is what SHAFT excels at than any other studio and a OP and ED by Bump of Chicken?? so hype. The Fall Train kicking back into over drive.

Christ the first episodes this season have just been phenomenal, its almost impossible to make a top 3 for me right now, but if I had to force my self into one, it Would be Haikyuu, Yuri on ICE, and March Lion....and they are literally just edging out the others which have been spectacular.

Fall is really revitalizing my love in anime, and I couldn't be happier, I needed a season liek this so badly, I WANT to be swarmed with shows, not knowing what I should watch first.

I got hopes for this one.

The MC is a jerk (yeah, sad backstory, blah-blah-blah, but a jerk is a jerk). I'm thinking that part of the storyline is that he becomes less of a jerk as it goes along.

I don't normally notice the art unless I find it really bad or really good. I noticed it here because overall the art was 'ok'. Nothing to write home about. But here and there was some really (really!) fuzzy, ugly stuff. It was so bad it had to be on purpose, but I don't know what that purpose might be.

Other than the MC actually improving (as in not sleepwalking thru his life and becoming less annoying), I have hopes for this because I think the plot will be good. That and I'm coming to really like the girl's personalities.

Keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

I've always heard people talk about this series, but I only know what the synopsis said before watching.

I was really blown away. The art style, while not super detailed, is very catching and soothing in a way. I was surprised how into it I got with the MC first speaking at the 9:24 mark. I didn't even realize it was that far in and that he never spoke until then, but was on screen almost 100% of the time.

The inner cat monologues, oh geez! I love it! The second the cats came on I was like "AWWWWW YISSSSSSS".
