I haven't read the manga, but I'm starting to think the one memory about him getting drunk and what looked like being with a girl might have been Kyouko. It matches her personality and a revenge plot when you think about it - a drunk driver killed his parents (so she gets him drunk) and then takes advantage of him or teases him to shame him (he isn't a social person and wouldn't be in those scenarios).

I wouldn't know from experience, but I wonder if the family dynamic displayed in the flashbacks is typical for a family with blood and adopted children. I see how the children were discouraged as Rei was more talented, but I can't help but feel things could have been different. Part of it could have been the fathers approach seeing as he didn't let the kids keep playing it seems (by choice/telling them not to).

Have been enjoying this show. There is something at the back of my mind. I keep feeling that Rei Kiriyama resembles another anime character that was female. Just can't remember who though, any one have an idea?

This is my favorite drama this season. It looks amazing. Best op & ed too. I thought the both songs sounded familiar and sure enough it's the same band that did the Tales of Abyss opening. I love that opening and it was my favorite Tale of game.

After episode 5 you understand why Rei is the way he is.

His adoptive father cares more about shogi than his own kids. While he's great with Rei I feel he only cares for him because he's good at shogi.

Rei being found outside a club drunk, and Kyouko taking advantage of him are 2 completely separate incidences. It was some older players from the shogi hall that pressured Rei to go to a club and pay for drinks, and they left him outside the club drunk, where Akari first found him. Akari alludes to the incident in the conversation with Issa and Smith at her aunt's club. (Carding and enforcement of legal drinking age in Japan can be rather lax.) That was after he moved out on his own. Kyouko took advantage of him when he was still living with the Kouda family.

In cultures that emphasize family bloodlines, adoption is not as common as it is in North America, nor do they have the same attitudes toward adopted children. There are lots of children in orphanages in Japan, many of them with still living parents that are not raising them, and it's not uncommon. (One reason Rei's aunt had no issue with the idea of putting him in an orphanage, I'm sure.) The Kouda family seemed to have its own dysfunctions before Rei was involved anyway. And all the emphasis on success in shogi carries a lot of pressure with it.

I have read the manga through volume 11, and I think it is a heart-rending, beautifully told story so far. I laughed and cried so much while reading it. I really wish the whole thing could be animated, they're doing a brilliant job.

Episode 6

Shogi players are just like athletes seeing that when they are not competing, they are practicing and studying, and Rei decides to skip out on study camp leading him into a slump. Pretty much, this episode is about Rei's relationship with his high school teacher Hayashida, and he's a big shogi fanatic, and he certainly things highly of Rei even if he doesn't think the same for himself. That was some very nice insight there as slumps happen to everybody. And seeing Hina and Rei going out together, that was pretty cute, especially when that baseball player she had feelings for shows up out of nowhere. Great to see that Rei is getting a lot of support from others around him.

Not enough Momo and the Cats this episode .

Hina, heh. Poor Rei, though, getting stuck in that awkward scenario.

I don't see why they wouldn't animate the entire series. Shaft is known for finishing what they start. like 90% of their series are complete or on their way to being completed.

As a side note: I really love the OST of this anime. Can't wait to get my hands on a disk.

Well, with this being a 22-23 episode series, at the pace its going it won't likely cover 50 chapters of the manga, which is still ongoing with 130+ chapters. So, I'm definitely hoping for future seasons.

I love the OP and ED, Bump of Chicken is good at making me cry. LOL.

I'm sure they will do future seasons, I doubt they would just do a one off. Shaft is the company that powered through 3 seasons of Sayonara Zetsubo sensei which was more of a cult hit then a popular one. Not to mention they've done something like 11 different pieces for Monogatari (movies/seasons/miniseasons). I'm not sure if they plan to finish up Nisekoi but something tells me they will eventually.

I know this show is getting a live adaptation so It must be popular in Japan. At the very least we will be seeing one more season probably next year.

Episode 7

So Takahashi and Hina are friends back in elementary school, so it's no wonder why they know each other well, all while Takahashi follows shogi, so he knows who Rei is. Hina just continues to be amazing as her words are certainly giving Rei's life a whole lot of meaning. Then Hina wants to learn how to play shogi, and Rei's method is just too much for a beginner. Nikaido's method is much better for those girls, especially when it comes to cute cats teaching the basics. In all, it's another great episode going to show just how great Hina is, and how cute she is when she's embarrassed.

That ending is really cute with the cats teaching how shogi is played.

Can't get enough of this even though I've read all the translated manga. Seeing it animated is wonderful as well. Loved it to see Rei flip and yell at the TV. Snorted my Dr. Pepper during that. All three sisters are adorable.

The background of akari, hina, and momo's house is my favorite. They use it a lot when we are there but i never get tired of it. That ED was surpisingly informative 9/10 would reccomend
