For prior conversation in anticipation of the show, see /forumtopic-907807/classicaloid-tv-series-anticipation

Plot Summary

The story follows high school students Kanae and Sōsuke, who live in a provincial town that is trying to revitalize itself with music. One day, suddenly "Classicaloid" versions of Beethoven and Mozart appear in front of Kanae and Sōsuke. When the suspicious-looking Classicaloids play music they call "mujik," it has a strange power: stars start to fall, and giant robots appear. Now every day is tumultuous. Eventually, more Classicaloids start to appear such as Bach, Chopin, and Schubert. What is the great power that the Classicaloids have? Are they friends or foe to humanity?

Episode 1

The music is great there, but that's about it as far as the good things for this show goes. It had its moments there that got me laughing, especially seeing Beethoven using that machine just to cook gyoza, but other than that I just wasn't into this show. Still, I'm interested in seeing what those other composers bring to the table seeing that in this show conventional wisdom is thrown out the window.

Episode 1

Pretty fun start, even the OP song has a classical feel to it.

The humor is pretty amusing, a lot of segments that are quite overexaggerated. In the meantime, we meet the main characters as well. I find Beethoven to stand out the most of out of the main characters.

Good start so far. The music is very catchy with the classical style.

That was actually pretty pleasant. I like the fact that Yoichi Fujita of Gintama is directing this, not to mention some of the VA from Gintama are here too.

That was a lot of fun! I was kind of like I was listening to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Beethoven is one of my favorite composers so it's great to start off with him.

M U S I Q U E ! ! !

Intrumental openings in anime are such a rarity that they're always welcome really. The show itself is super wacky and nothing really makes sense, but it's too fun for me to care. Mostly thanks to how Sugita is sugiting as well as ever.

xD that was the definition of fun from start to finish. Amazing OP to be round off with an equally fun ED.

The segment before the OP was the best part of the first episode. Pure music with background action. The plot itself feels like a thin excuse to string music segments together, and sitting through ~10 minutes of it before finally getting to a musical segment was boring. And the final musical segment had the sound effects blaring over the music, effectively resigning the strongest part of the show into the background.

Fun in sections, but I have no confidence that the show knows what to do with itself. Feels like alot of wasted potential.

Well, I thought this first episode was pretty cool. Had me laughing at parts and I like all of the characters so far.

It's also interesting to hear classical music "modernized", even if its not really my cup of tea.

And while I really like Mozart and Beethoven in this, their music is so overplayed that it just feels kind of bland to me. I know they're geniuses, but if you hear too much of anything then after a while it starts to get old. Since in Western culture we practically hear Beethoven and Mozart since birth, I find myself so tired of their masterpieces. Bach is a personal exception though. No matter how much I hear Bach he never gets old. But still, get Chopin and Schubert in there ASAP.

Also - I actually kind of like the Japanese characters. I think they have good chemistry with the classicaloids.

Overall, I'm looking forward to more of this. An interesting concept with fun execution.

Episode 1

I was expecting this to be weird, and weird it was.

A show by a Gintama veteran hasn't failed to make me laugh yet, and this was no exception, though it wasn't at the level of the same writer/director duo's Osomatsu-san. Some of the gags could potentially get stale (Beethoven's gyoza thing is not going to be funny for a whole season) but I have faith that this crew knows what they're doing when it comes to comedy.

One thing that didn't quite work for me was the music, which is a bit of a problem in a show called Classicaloid. Updating the symphonies to go with the updated characters is a good idea that could lead to all sorts of fun in the hands of a great composer, but it's also a risky task when applied to something as deservedly revered as the music of Mozart and Beethoven, and so far I'm not impressed. Rather than being cool, catchy experiments, the 'updated' versions of classical pieces so far have seemed like flatter, lesser versions of the originals. Beethoven's 6th is whimsical and grandiose, but the version played in the first episode seemed more like elevator music, not underscoring the (wonderful) visuals of the magic scene as well as the original could have.

If the comedy stays strong, I can live with the music issues, but it's a real shame to have that aspect be a weakness in a show about composers.
