A lot of things happen this week. A few disturbing things and a few interesting things, a few surprises, and a few things not surprising at all. The important bits:

Episode 10:

Ah shoot. I correctly predicted some plot points of easy to average difficulty but I WAS DEAD WRONG on the harder ones lol. This anime is definitely "good." It'd be a stretch to call it great but you'd be absolutely wrong to call it bad as well.

Trying to organize the information and how it connects to what we're previously given is like going from point L to point C to point G to point C to point D and hence forth but it's all making sense, there's just a lot we are being given to work with. So I'll just save it since, my summaries are kind of just me thinking out loud.

Anyway. I liked all of the developments and subtle reveals this week, except for Aveline, that was kind of just eh. The after credits scene was interesting.

Episode 11:

Satisfying plot dump right before the finale. Confirmed a lot of what we had assumed, and explained the fun abstract things. Not much is left besides where the real key, and sky sensor is. Or if Aveline will sacrifice Ryo-tas to "become the key?"

In case you missed some of the not obvious things:

So, it's kind of like ghosts communicate on the AM frequency and physical beings on the FM frequency. You can't perceive ghosts because it's impossible to listen to two radio stations on one channel at the same time. It makes sense on the most basic level, since radio waves are longitudinal waves, as is sound. All sound is, is the vibration of air molecules. So vibrating air and converting the spirit AM frequency to an FM one is not totally ridiculous.

Gamo is special because he has a special receptor to electromagnetic waves. So instead of radios, let's say that the physical world is hitting balls inside of a batting cage. The spirit realm is hitting balls in a field outside the cage. The cage and the field can't perceive each other. Normally, you can only hit balls as far the net inside the cage will allow you to, and the spirit realm is free. What Gamo can do is, after he died, and after he takes in a large amount of electromagnetic waves, he is able to passively, be inside both the field and the cage, tearing down the net. Thus being able to interact with both. His role is take a large amount of waves, and overload the Odd Eye and destroy it.

Watchin' this episode reminds me of that old movie "Frequency" (the son talkin' to his supposed dead father through a radio).

Ahh~ but finally, we get to see Izumi's role in all this, as well as Kiryū's paranormal nature, aside from the OOB experience.

I dropped this anime after like 4 episodes, was the payout in these last few episodes worth picking it up again or does it continue to suck?

I'm not sure if I would say the characters or story got any better, but it did get more interesting with some huge surprises after a few more episodes. I would at least watch until the plot twist to decide if it's worth continuing. I can't remember if it was episode 6 or something else but you'll know it when you see it.

Yeah, there wasn't much character growth or development overall. The plot hummed along nicely. The twist felt like a natural moment as opposed to the usual stupid ass-pull just to create a stir. There was also much less focus on Gamo, which instantly improved the series ten fold for me.

All told, if you really hated the series early on I'm not sure I'd say it necessarily improved or changed drastically enough to change your feelings. It just sort of got better in a natural course as the story was allowed to spin itself.

Terrible show.

Bad from start to finish and the finale felt rushed.

Fast paced all the way till the end. For what it was, I still enjoyed the show.

However, I guess now I'm going to have to buy the novels cause there's still a lot I don't understand.

The ending kinda threw me for a loop. Everyone's alive again aside from Gamon?

After the first couple of episodes, I really ended up liking this one. The final episode did feel very rushed and probably would have been better off as two episodes but the series ended on a high note. They were definitely setting it up for more but, given the reception this season received, I'm doubtful we'll get more. Still, there was enough conclusiveness to satisfy (and I'm more than happy with Gamo being essentially canonically dead for good).

Not great or life changing but still definitely in the "good" camp.

Finale:

Definitely not a bad show. When you have a handful of shows every season, most of which are stroking their own ego or "charging their spirit bomb" and nothing really happens because they are banking on a second season that'll never come; this show is refreshing for me because information and events come like that. *snapping fingers* The dialogue was fast but it all added to the story and characters. Not that the characters went too in depth since time was so limited. There was science in there and that was enjoyable, figuring out what they had laid down for you. If you know some shit about college level physics then it all made sense, in a way that...in a way that's like: this is how things really are, and this is how things would be if you extrapolate it. But we are also a fictional genre so let's throw a fun/silly existence of the spirit world out there.

Yes the pacing was absurdly fast, especially the finale. But when I watched it, i immediately thought, this is like trying to fit 2 harry potter books worth of content into one anime season. The first book should have ended when everyone found out they were dead. The second at the resolution there. And then you can stretch all the details and events, and characters inbetween all of that. So the show didn't do anything that didn't make any sense. The writers clearly weren't stupid. This show had too much to do, with too little. If i had to say, Occultic; Nine is probably 10x better in its light novel format as opposed to this anime. Not that I've read it.

If I had to review it: Meh..Ok/10 Would i recommend it to a friend? No, there are way better anime out there. Go watch Monogatari or Gintama. Is it bad? No. Is it worth your time? If you watched it every week while it was airing perfect, if not, you'll need a post-BBC Sherlock type of mystery erection.

This last episode was very very rushed. And if the info dump didn't kill the mood enough, the Teekyu pacing will. There were scenes that demands dramatic pauses in between dialogues, and up-close angles to ensure that the viewers would be pulled into a sense of catharsis. But with the fast talk and the way they pan the view on characters (such as that scene with Asuna's health failing, and it was zoomed out instead of in), makes me look like some passerby just watching something, then shrugged it off and moved on. Even the scene towards Gamotan's decision to stay didn't budge me one bit.

This series had so many issues from the beginning, though I do admit that there had been a few good episodes towards the latter that almost made me believe that it'll be able to resurrect itself completely. Hence, why I stayed watchin' this to its very end. But sadly, that was all there is to it. Never read the source material, but I have a feelin' that it gives better justice to the story and its characters.

Good concept for an anime series, but not enough love placed into making it. Not recommending this to anyone.

Occultic;Nine Finale 7/10

The finale was pretty rushed, but then again the whole series was fast paced. But that whole little preview at the end hints at more so I guess the story does continue in the light novel.

I mean there is so much still left unexplored like who the heck is Ririka Nishizono and the importance of Ria and her little demon to the overall plot or were they just a side story that tied into helped explain the out of body experience type of thing.

I also like how Occultic Nine actually makes sense in that it means that the respiratory system can last 9 minutes after death hence them being out of body for almost 9 days and 1 day = 1 minute in absolute or real time.

Final Thoughts on the Season

Okay at first I wasn't really too sure what to expect from this show. The first few episodes were confusing as hell and I had no idea what was going on. Now that can either be a good thing or a bad thing considering on how they handled the execution. I always liked being confused at the beginning and then seeing things come together and I thought the show did a fairly decent job at doing that while also throwing in twists that kept you wanting to come back to see how it intertwines with the whole situation. A lot of people would disregard this series cause most what stuff to make sense the second it happens. I liked trying to figure out what was going on and considering that it involved aspects of science, physics, and supernatural phenomenon it made me even more intrigued. I have always been a fan of the supernatural and the many theories that people have explored so this show was actually a real treat for me. That being said this show isn't for everyone, it relies heavily on dialogue and if you can't keep up with the fast paced talking you are going to have a bad time. I think the series started to turn for me when they first introduced the Kotoribako or when Ria found out that she was living with her dead brother. The story is actually very well thought out with facts in my opinion. The characters were pretty fun (I know a lot of people didn't like Gamotan). The animation was kind of weird but I think it was mostly an art style kind of thing rather than bad animation (please no hate on Ryo-tas and her Tawawas). They also got really fancy with camera angles. The OST was rather nice, I liked the ED a lot. Other than that I enjoyed it, since it did cater to the inner supernatural nerd that I have. But like I said I can understand why people would not like it.
