There are two different types of japanese keyboards. Romaji and Kana.

Romaji means you spell out whatever japanese you want to type with the letters on a normal keyboard. Like you type n-o and it becomes の. b-o becomes ぼ, and r-u becomes る.

Then there's a Kana keyboard. Each key represents a different hiragana/katakana character. You'd have to do a lot of memorizing the positions of the kana, or maybe put small sticky-notes over each key with the kana it represents if you want to get any use out of it.

I think you were expecting Romaji but got Kana. Especially since the ラ characters showed up in the same spots as the o's in "noboru".

If you go into the settings/properties there should be an "Input method" option. Switch it from Kana to Romaji and you'll be set.

I've just tried the version for Windows 10 and if you type the letters all in one case the characters should automatically change to the correct character. However if you mix in upper and lower case your only option is to use the convert text function, which will make a guess as to what you are trying to type. That is the only way I can think you have gone from noburo to mirakorasuna (though I am unable to replicate this same behaviour).

I literally cannot get my computer to type Japanese differently from what I did thar lol

I tried going to settings/properties but it only showed me keyboard layout

I see the kana on the bottom but I can't switch it to romaji- there's no visible option for it when I click it

Click on the EN icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Choose "JP".
Click on the icon again and choose "show language bar".
Click in somewhere that you can type text, such as the reply box on this thread.
On the language bar select input mode as Hiragana.
Type in some romaji text such as kore ha renshu desu, which should automatically convert to これはれんしゅです or これは連取です if you select the conversion option.

Admitedly you might not get the on screen keyboard but I have never found it to be particularly helpful.

There's no Hiragana input listed in it though, only Kana. I think it's bugged on this computer. Redownloading didn't seem to help.

Romaji should let you type in Japanese by spelling stuff out in romaji. I'm doing it right now. このように…と言っても俺の指を見ているわけがないよね。

You can switch between alphanumeric and hiragana with Alt + Tilde (that little squiggly in the top-left of your keyboard). I remember when installing keyboards, I used Japanese language in the English 101/102-Key keyboard layout, as opposed to the Japanese 106 Key layout. I remember tripping up on this once - can't remember what selecting the 106-Key layout did, but I remember it wasn't anything I wanted.
