I think his point is that to pick a style and work only in that, rather than developing your own, is limiting and if everyone does that, eventually art will stagnate. I don't think it is an unreasonable point.

We see it in music as well, where many bands fit very neatly into their genre, doing nothing that makes them stand out. I'm always a little torn when I come across a band with obviously great skills at a technical level, and even the ability to put together decent songs, only they sound like 100 other bands... I don't quite know what to to think of them, but they usually don't hold my interest.

It's one thing to say, "I love what this person is doing, it inspires me and I'd like to derive my own style from that."
It's another to say "I want to do what this person is doing, except with perhaps a different subject or theme."

I'm not saying either is right or wrong, but I'm usually happier to see the former than the latter. Having said that, sometimes it's nice to see someone do some good, straight up, solid rock and roll.

To test my understanding, I have extrapolated this topic's logic to compile a scale from bad to good of different styles of three-dimensional art.

(not very realistic)
3DCG anime person
Anime figurine
3DCG non-anime person
Doll depicting a non-anime person
Procreation
(very realistic)

Thus, I have concluded that parents are the only true artists, and it would be a shame if we did not all focus our talents exclusively on procreation. Did I get it right?

I agree with Stars. Drawing is subjective, and people don't draw for others approval. If someone draws anime, it's probably because they enjoy it

I have no idea what your point is, but I'm pretty sure caricature porn makes you wrong.

Did you ever consider that people can be good at drawing the anime style and bad at drawing realism?

Art doesn't have to be realistic. Literally anything can be viewed as art.

I....think i understand what you're getting at. But you worded it terribly. Anime art can looking absolutely beautiful, you just need to be creative enough with your art. You should never use templates to draw, but anime is not just templates. Idol shows and ecchi shows use templates and thats why they are mediocre animation wise. But if you look at the art of Beserk and anything by Satoshi Kon, you'll see plenty of creativity.

bottom line, do your research before you start a thread.

Art isn't about you, it's the artists' right. They do what they want. & I don't think that's a waste of time. Do what you want. When you wanna.
