Before the days of a reliable connection i used to buy and collect Anime box sets, OAV's and anime films. As i got older so too did my connection and i began to stream Anime online and slowly reduced the amount of anime i bought. My question is this to all what's the most you have ever spent buying Anime for a single film or box set ?

For me it would be my Fruits Basket Hard back box set which set me back £65 i enjoyed it very much and do not regret buying it at the time nor do i now also, so what about everyone else ?

I think most of them understand that they are on the internet and can look shit up.

I paid around $60 for each of my Tsukuyomi and Death Note boxed sets, but I don't remember which one cost more. I'm eyeing the recent $150 Haruhi Suzumiya set, but I don't know if I want to pay that much for anime I've already seen. No matter how awesome it is. I might pay $150 for a copy of La Blue Girl, because that's hard to find and a classic, but Haruhi? Ehhhh, maybe not.

Hmm, the most I ever spent... I actually wind up getting most of my anime used (We have a used DVD store here that seems to get some awesome series and they don't seem to know they value of what they have, I got both seasons of Code Geass there for $40 and considering it was OOP, that's pretty damn good), but they most I have probably spent is $85 for Clannad, but that was both season 1 and After Story so still a pretty darned good deal.

If we're talking value per episode, I did spend $57 on Black Butler ~ Book of Circus. Worth it.

You make a good point there are a few box set's I'd like to own but i have already seen them and it's hard to rationalize bank rolling that kind of spending. I also once collected a magazine collection and got a bunch of anime doing this too dread to think what that entire collection vost me over all...

Well it's not really a single box set, but I bought every season of Dragon Ball Z—all nine of them—back when I was 13 or so. It cost me near $200 if I remember right.

It’s not a box set, but I did buy all thirteen Fullmetal Alchemist dvds and the movie about a decade ago. If I recall correctly, each dvd was ~ twenty dollars, so I spent around $280 on the series over the course of two years.

I think the Higurashi series totaled about $120 for me. No regrets though.

Back in the day, when 26 episode series would get released on individual "volumes" of 3-5 episodes for $30, I used to get them for $20 at Best Buy, and back then, that was a good deal. Until Right Stuf started liquidating them for like $6. I had about 20 series that way, I think 4 or 5 of them, I paid the full $120. They weren't even good series, though - Black Cat, I know, was one of them.

. . . I got Code Geass that way, though, and it's totally worth it, because the sets came with the audio dramas, which are the greatest thing ever, and they haven't been made available any other way (except YouTube, of course. And all of my friends got to borrow my copies. And by "borrow", I mean, "I sort of forced it on them because you have to hear these things they're amazing!"
And now that I've bought the FUNi set, I've probably spent... $120 for season 1 original, $40 for R2 box set, ... what, $110 for the FUNi LE box? and 4/5 of the Akito episodes on bluray from Japan, so that's $240 ($60/episode... yeah, that's what they pay in Japan). So $540 on Geass DVDs. And I didn't get the Japanese blurays of the original series, which would have been like $400 each season (FUNi's is $110 for both seasons, and they have a cheaper edition).

Aside from that... I've only gotten two series from Aniplex. One is really popular and I hated it, so I'm not going to name it (it's 13 episodes). The other is one of my favorite series ever... and, since it's a lot less popular, each set of 13 was the price of 3 episodes of the more popular series. And it didn't get a dub. And the BD subtitles are bad. And you can't turn the subs off. And Crunchy's subtitles aren't much better. And you can't turn subs off on Roku (which is how I usually watch Crunchy). So I've considered buying the Japanese editions so I can watch it raw, but the cost...

Everything else, I tend to wait until it's dirt cheap ($20 for the whole series is less than $2/episode - sometimes less than $1/episode. That is dirt cheap).

The amusing thing about this thread is how the prices for DVD box sets were sometimes what a single VHS tape cost. I know I probably have an old mail order catalog around here from the late 80's and tapes (that's what VHS was kids) ran something like $29 (US) to $59, depending on content. I think the most I ever paid for one set was the Tenchi Muyo DVD Ultimate Collection that was about $120 in 2000, the one that came with the unintended bonus of a computer virus on the one disc. If you consider that series were typically 2 to 3 episodes per tape and ran in that 30 to 60 range, some series cost a pretty penny....(Tenchi Universe, *cough* *cough*)

Great posts Lavender and Shishiosa and a great insight into your spending history one set i have had on eye for years is the complete Cardcaptors dvd box set which was the anime that got me into it all to start my anime spark if you will. Not going to think about how much i spent on Play.Asia and my early spending habits were around animes that were either girl meets boy or boy meets girl failing that it was stuff like light heart'ed comedy or stuff with a sexy twist. Then i stumbled into Fruits Basket and that made me realize there was far more to anime then what i knew previously i also paid a fair bit for the first 2 volumes of Kiddy Grade and bought the opening volumes to Spiral and Ah My Goddess all 3 shows i need to catch up on at some point and actually finish.

*raises hand*

$100 U.S. for all five VHS tapes of Ah, My Goddess!

And *thinks* $220 U.S. for all of Magic Knight Rayearth in the same format (minus the Rayearth OAVs).
