Like Subnorman pointed out above, the same problem seems to affect Firefox too, but to a lesser extent. The font is clearly aliased, but not as badly as compared to Chrome. It's more evident when the font is in cursive, but it is visible on normal font.

Like I said, I noticed this problem this morning, with a laptop running the new Chrome version 54. Afterwards I tried with a desktop still running version 53 from August, and the same problem occured. It's a bit hard to see on the screenshots as the forum seems to downscale the images, but when watching on video or on fullsize screenshots, it's more distracting.

EDIT: Allright, here are the fullsize screenshots https://postimg.org/gallery/226rppufa/

This seems to be the issue:

I'm not really seeing a problem in Chrome... I'm not running Canary, just the latest: Version 54.0.2840.59 m (64-bit)

Well that's strange to say the least I'm not running Canary either, but the normal stable build, same as you. I'll give Canary a try, as in the link shinryou provided, the reporter of the bug states that it wouldn't be suffering from the bug.

So I gave Canary (or Chrome v56 beta) a try, and there the antialiasing works as intended and subs display correctly, so in regards to that it seems that shinryou was right. What I still find a mystery is, that how come also other browsers (Firefox and Edge) started suffering from aliasing at the same time Chrome did? It can't be just the one update Chrome got that'd be faulty

Same problem across edge, firefox, and chrome. It seems most noticeable on Chrome.

Edit: It seems to look fine on Chrome Canary for me.

Well, Chrome Canary seems to have fixed the issue, but it's weird that it's also present on Firefox, if it's a Chrome issue.

Here are screenshots comparing the two: Firefox https://vgy.me/d5lef5.png, Chrome Canary https://vgy.me/ryi9PN.png.

I'm not sure about this, but if its across all browsers then I assume its a problem within the OS.
Earlier this week there was an Windows 10 Cumulative update.
Maybe this update caused it.

Edit: I noticed that the Shockwave Plugin of Chrome is crashing multiple times while watching something on CR.

I can confirm the 54 beta build as broken. Dev 55 and Canary 56 are fine.

Or, perhaps the guilty party is this update https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3194343
This one was pushed at the same time as that cumulative update you linked. It could explain how this seems to be an universal problem across all browsers (except Chrome Canary)

Would Shockwave have anything to do with CR? Isn't CR's player entirely Flash-based?

If it really is a Windows Update issue, I have the feeling we will have to wait quite a long time to get this fixed
A potential reason why the plugin is crashing is because Chrome has its on internal Flash installation besides the one from Windows itself. And therefore Chrome gets confused which one to choose. The crashes first happened today when I noticed the fuzzy font.
I dont exactly know which Flash player CR is using. Maybe someone of the Mods could aswer this.

Having this issue too. Had to install Canary to get subtitles to display correctly. They looked the same on Chrome, FF, and Edge. I wonder if reinstalling flash or something would fix this?

Also having this issue, not very happy as it makes the videos unwatchable. Such a great update it's not even been fixed in three days time. Doing just swell on the dev front.

It's definitely a bug in Chrome or Chrome's Flash implementation. It seems to be fixed in upcoming releases though, as I've already mentioned above.
The bug does not just affect us, some other sites with Flash players have the same issue.
